There was no simple answer, but there was a true one at the moment. “Well, right now, I am great!” she said honestly as she gestured to the medal on her open jacket. “Certainly didn’t expect that. All told, it’s bene a pretty great night. Haven’t had one of those in awhile, so… I’ll take it.”

Faye gestured to the garden at large. “Have you had a chance to look around much?”

“You deserved it, putting a lot on the line to catch the guy.” He was glad to see her in much higher spirits, it was refreshing. “To answer your question, no not really. Until today I hadn’t any reason to come here and then most of it was spent talking to people and enjoying the buffet food.” Luke looked around “I wouldn’t even know what I was looking at anyway. It’s like I said, Flowers are nice to look at but they’re kinda not in my skill set, I’ve never been a gree thumb. Unless its something like hemlock in a murder investigation” he shrugged, “What about you, you seem at peace here.”

She looked around, taking in the details of the orchard behind them and then gazed back at Wyatt. “I grew up like this. Tracken Two was a self-sufficient colony. We hunted, fished, gathered or grew most of the stuff we ate, and I spent a lot of time in the communal gardens. And when I was recovering from… before, I decided to take up a hobby.” She shrugged. “The space was set up to be a possible garden and it just seemed like something we needed. Though I can’t say it was entirely selfless. I get a lot of enjoyment from being in here.” She gestured to the whole space around them. “I designed this. Had a lot of help to get it all put together though. Couldn’t have done it without their help,” she said with no small measure of pride.

“You’re a woman of many talents, you never cease to surprise me” Luke scanned the area again, “Im not much but if you ever need another hand, I’d be willing to help out from time to time, the sprain says I need to step away from work and this could be it, maybe you could teach me even.” He was trying to avoid thinking about the night they were drinking together and was debating whether to bring it up, apologise Hell what was he going to say I’m sorry I turned you down, I wish I hadn’t?

“Haven’t you learned yet that I’m always full of surprises?” she retorted with amusement.

Eyeing him critically, Faye searched his features as if she were looking for something. There was nothing hard about the gaze though and after a moment she gestured with her head. “Come on, I’ll give you a tour.”

He smiled, “Great, lead on” He stepped to her side showing he was ready to be led on their tour. Luke was excited, this was probably the first normal interaction the pair had, either ever or in a very long time and he was going to soak it up.

Pivoting on the ball of her foot, Faye moved off along the path moving counter-clockwise. “So that’s an orchard, some smaller full size trees plus a whole bunch of espaliered ones. It’s a method of training fruit trees to grow in a lattice structure that moves upright and horizontally. Saves a lot of space,” she said gesturing with her finger to their right.

Following alongside her right Luke matched her pace with ease, they were in no rush so it wasn’t difficult, as she pointed out the orchard she seemingly answered all of his question about what espaliered meant and why you’d use a lattice structure. “Efficient, like their designer. ” Finally he did have a question she hadn’t already answered. “How many different trees are there in total?”

“And what is your favourite?” He asked now looking at her. “If you have one that is.” Luke was genuinely engaged in the tour and their conversation, he never thought he’d be walking through a garden asking questions about someone’s favourite trees. The Delta Quadrant was weird like that.
