“Haven’t you learned yet that I’m always full of surprises?” she retorted with amusement.

Eyeing him critically, Faye searched his features as if she were looking for something. There was nothing hard about the gaze though and after a moment she gestured with her head. “Come on, I’ll give you a tour.”

He smiled, “Great, lead on” He stepped to her side showing he was ready to be led on their tour. Luke was excited, this was probably the first normal interaction the pair had, either ever or in a very long time and he was going to soak it up.

Pivoting on the ball of her foot, Faye moved off along the path moving counter-clockwise. “So that’s an orchard, some smaller full size trees plus a whole bunch of espaliered ones. It’s a method of training fruit trees to grow in a lattice structure that moves upright and horizontally. Saves a lot of space,” she said gesturing with her finger to their right.

Following alongside her right Luke matched her pace with ease, they were in no rush so it wasn’t difficult, as she pointed out the orchard she seemingly answered all of his question about what espaliered meant and why you’d use a lattice structure. “Efficient, like their designer. ” Finally he did have a question she hadn’t already answered. “How many different trees are there in total?”

“In the orchard? Seven, but there are a different varieties of some of the ones o the espaliers. But if you mean the whole garden, there is…” Her eyes narrowed and Faye looked up slightly as if she were actively recalling something. “Sixty-eight, but that includes all the ones in the tropical glasshouse in the corner. We’ll get to that pretty soon.”

“And what is your favourite?” He asked now looking at her. “If you have one that is.” Luke was genuinely engaged in the tour and their conversation, he never thought he’d be walking through a garden asking questions about someone’s favourite trees. The Delta Quadrant was weird like that.

Faye gave a small smile. “A favourite tree? Hmmm, I might have said I don’t have one, but there is one at the top of the hill I’ll show you that I adore. It’s so unusual and lovely.”

“The fact this ship has trees and a hill amazes me” He shook his head, “I can’t wait to see it” Luke continued to follow he would switch between looking at the trees and flowers to watching Faye talking about, she seemed so animated and happy. A sight he hadn’t yet seen, one he thought he could get used too.

They approached the first corner, and all along that side of the garden were raised rectangular beds that sat currently empty. “These and the ones that are mirrored on the other side, are the raised beds for the crew. Seventy-two in total. People can sign up for one and are free to grow vegetables or flowers or whatever they want. We do have a list of restricted items due to health and safety issues but everything else is up to their imagination.” She grinned wider. “I of course have mine already claimed. And if you are really wanting to learn, this is the way to do it. Hands on.”

“I don’t know, the last time I grew something it was a batch of cress at school. I’d be you’re worst student for sure” He examines some of the plots that had already been snapped up and were growing all shapes and sizes of fruit and vegetables. He could only identify few simple crop, tomatoes, carrots and even grapes in some locations. “OK, I’ll give it a go. But first you have to show me yours, for someone to have built all this…” he gestured around the room, “Thier patch must be something worthy to look at” Luke was excited, to grow fruit and vegetables of all things.

Faye shook her head. “I haven’t had a chance to start mine yet, but I have seeds I’ve started that I’ll transplanting. I’ll let you know when I’m planing to do that and you can help?”

He nodded only a little disappointed not to be able to see her work first hand, beyond what he had already seen at least. “I’d like that, it’ll give me some practice before starting my own. I don’t even know where to start.” Luke once again met her stride as they continue to pass the different plots some empty, some full of life and others just starting their cycle. It was amazing how this was on a starship.

As they walked long the side past the rest of the raised beds, that came to the corner where a large tessellated glass structure stood. It was obviously hot and humid inside, based on the visible condensation, and through the glass it was a riot of greens with splashes of other colours. “That’s the tropical glass house. The garden space is set to one climate for ease of growing, but having this structure allows the botany staff to have more options for ecological study. I can show you that or we can go right to The Hill.”

~Faye Calloway

He looked at the misty dome, the warmth inviting as it was the humidity would ruin his uniform, his dress uniform for that fact too. “How about we skip to the hill? We can come back and visit the tropical dome when I’m not in synthetic cotton and it cuts off my breathing so much we end up in medical” He chuckled, the tropical dome looked as exciting as any location he had seen so far but he also wanted to see what Faye would consider her favourite tree and a unique tree. “lead on mystro” He held out his hand in a ‘lead on’ gesture.
