“This goes without saying that anything I say here is confidential,” Faye said seriously.

“Of course,” Kiama replied sincerely and without hesitation.

“I really wanted to talk to you when I was in the brig, but even if it had been allowed, there was too much going on and my mind was not doing great. I couldn’t risk you picking things up and putting herself accidentally in danger unnecessarily.” Faye resumed cutting up the cucumber. “The big data security project I’m working on is all good, and still very necessary, but… I had a secondary order that turned out was not legit. Very long story short, my mother arrived as apart of an ongoing investigation, and me, knowing what was at stake and what would happen if we waited too long to try and clear my name, decided on the brilliant idea of being arrested and put in the brig where, one, I’d be safe from those that might try to harm me, and two, prompt a response from those who might have been involved in the false order. And it worked! Which is the only reason I am standing here with you right now. Otherwise, I’d probably be… somewhere, disappeared and maybe dead, but mostly they likely would have kept me around until I no longer proved useful. And now this whole mess had opened up bigger things that is going to take some time and significant skill to untangle.”

Kiama listened closely, feeling sadness and also gratitude wash over her. Putting the knife down, she moved a few steps so that she was standing right next to Faye. “Thank you, Faye,” she said softly and placed her hand lightly on her friend’s shoulder. She didn’t know what else to say. It was a lot to take in. Mostly because it made her realise how easily things could have gone wrong and they might not have had this conversation right now.

As Naim’s hand touched her shoulder, Faye set down the knife and turned towards her friend. And there were those emotions again, hovering too close.

“I’m so glad it worked and you’re still here,” Kiama said and wrapped her arms impulsively around Faye; giving her a tight hug. “I’m not sure if it is possible, but if I can help you in anyway, let me know. I’m always here for you. No matter what.”

Faye hugged Kiama back and there was a moment where she not only didn’t resist or try to pull back, but she gave equally to the hug. Finally though, she did pull back. “I may need it, actually. I’m better than I was a few days ago, but so much happened and it’s a lot to process.”

Kiama nodded, one hand still resting on Faye’s arm, if she let her. “That’s only natural,” she replied thoughtfully. “I would be more concerned if that wasn’t the case.”

“And there’s more to happen soon too.” She took a deep breath. “The gist of it that the person I had been receiving my orders from since I got her was not in fact my actual handler, but an imposter. And the real man who I trusted with my life was held prisoner. He’s survived, but only barely,” she said, eyes welling with tears. “I’ll get to see him in awhile once he’s recovered a bit.” It was almost a sympathetic rush of emotions. She knew what Leroy might have felt because of the terrible things she had experienced and it created a visceral sensation in her body.

The rush of emotions she was sensing from Faye, was beginning to be a little overwhelming fro Kiama and she started to feel her eyes filling with tears. Of course she could put more of her mental energy into enforcing her mental shields, but she wanted to feel Faye’s emotions. It wouldn’t lessen them for Faye, but never having experienced anything like that herself, it helped her understand a little more. For a few moments she let it all sink in silence before whispering, “I don’t know what to say other than that I’m glad that he’s alive and safe now. All that and everything you have been through … it’s a lot to handle and work through. Be gentle with yourself on your own road to recovery, yes? I don’t want to lose you.”

Faye nodded. “I’m working with the counsellor. I do anyway, but especially now I’m getting extra attention,” she said with raised brows and amusement. But it was good. She was glad for it. “And thank you. You’re a good friend.”

“But let’s get back to curry or else we’re never going to eat,” she said with a smile turning back to work on combining everything to make the raita.
