The silence alone probably spoke volumes but after a few measured breaths, Faye’s mind clearly working through the conversation again, she sighed. “He said, ‘Not like dis. So… fine. Dat was his line. I’m no’ angry at him, believe it or not. I just…” Tears finally welled in her eyes but she let them this time. “I don’t ask for dat on a whim. It takes a lot to get to dat point. I think…”

“Faye, you can’t pick and choose the rules for other people. You said you don’t ask for intimate comfort on a whim—well, it looks like Wyatt doesn’t hand it out on a whim either. It’s unfair of you to feel slighted or be angry with him because he has the same standards that you do.” Zef shook her head slightly. It was difficult trying to make an inebriated person see logic sometimes.

Faye slouched back against the couch, bending her knees and drawing them up so the soles of her feet were flat on the floor. “Someone I knew when I firs’ came aboard de ship called me earlier. I t’ink he reminded me how lonely I am. I don’t t’ink I realized just how bad it’s been. I ‘ave been working on my project long hours every day for months to get it where it needed to be. To protect de ship and crew. And then I spent my downtime workin’ on de garden because dis whole t’ing with my secret orders was jus’ so stressful and it helped. But de garden is done and now everyt’ing else is such a mess, and then he called from his new ship and it’s all so mixed up in my head.”

This was the first time she’d mentioned the person that called. “Who is he and why did he remind you that you’re lonely? Is he someone you were interested in personally?”

Giving Faye a moment to come up with an answer, Zef got up and refilled her cup from the replicator. Once she’d settled back into the cushions, her brows raised expectantly, waiting for an answer.

She was starting to feel tired, which meant the alcohol was shifting in her system. Reaching out, Faye drank some more of the juice before her lips curled up slightly in a smile at the memory of the conversation earlier. “He is de former operations officer before Darach. He was not here long before he was reassigned. I had a lot of cargo and we had a lot t’coordinate. We jus’…connected, and…”

Zef noted Faye’s body language as she talked about the unknown he. She was relaxing—actually showing signs of impending sleep. That was a positive feather in the mystery man’s cap.

Curling up a bit more and trying to rest her head in the crook of her arm, Faye frowned. “I don’ know how to feel about him. He’s easy t’be around and he… cares.” She swallowed as she half-closed her eyes. “He knows wha’s goin’ on. I prob’ly shouldn’ ‘ave told ‘im bu’ I wan’ed to tell someone not here, not mixed up in it. He likes me. I don’ t’ink he meant fer me to know, bu’ it was kinda obvious. He’s confusin’ fer me ‘cause as lovely as he is, he reminds me of someone I wan’ te ferget.”

’…someone she wanted to forget…’ Now probably wasn’t the time to ask about who that was. Emotions would try to take hold and Faye would wind up either getting upset again, or being unable to rest once she passed out. Tomorrow would be soon enough to tackle his identity. Realizing the conversation was nearly over with because the alcohol and high alert status Calloway had been at for the last few days, were finally taking their toll.

Getting up once more, Zef found a throw and spread it out over the other woman. “The couch is reasonably comfortable, but so are the pillows. Sleep as long as you like, Faye. We’ll have all the time we need to talk later.”

The counselor took her coffee into the bedroom and sat on the bed. “So much for sleep…”
