“I’m glad you didn’t succeed and I’m glad you got the help you needed. God’s there been times I’ve thought about it too.” He still hadn’t opened his eyes, “After the war, after my ex wife and after just everything. How easy would it be, but then I thought wait, I endured all of that just to give up? No not me and not you either.” Luke now opened his eyes and faced her. “You maybe different but you’re not alone, not anymore and neither am I.”

“I haven’t been for awhile. I made the Manhattan my home, as someone reminded me you can’t have that without family. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that this crew is particularly persistent,” she said with a soft smile.

He gave a short snorting chuckle. “I predicted there was a 14.2857 percent change you’d try to eject me out of an air lock but now… there might be a 16.666667 chance we… well its a small chance but a chance.” Luke shrugged, “Maybe just maybe I can numb the pain, decrease your work load and just… be there for you. If there’s something I’m good at it’s being there, like some lyrics to a song you can’t get out if your head..? Until you listen to the song.”

Faye gave him a lopsided grin. “Well, I’m still not back on duty yet, so workload is fine. As for the others…” She shrugged. “We could see what happens. I make no promises I can’t keep and this is not something I can promise anything around. I’m a no-go for relationships right now. Too much to deal with, no the least of which is my long-lost mother. Anything else would be too much.”

He nodded, “I can handle that and well youre mum is kinda scary intimidating but I like her and pill give you space and time” He leaned forward, “No relationship and no promises I’m old enough to know but Faye, I owe you for the other night.” He leaned in and gave her a short peck on the cheek before leaning back and before she could object. It wasn’t a romantic kiss but an affectionate one or atleast, as little as an affectionate kiss could go without being invasive. She had set out the boundaries and from now he had to obey to them, he’d leave the decision to her. “Thankyou for opening up, it makes a difference.”

Well, this hasn’t turned into a warp core failure, imagine that, Faye thought as she gazed at him. There was a warm tingle remaining on her cheek and she reached up to touch the spot with her fingertips. What she wanted versus what was okay in this moment meant deciphering her own motivations, and the micro expressions of her face told the story of her flurry of thoughts he had instigated. There was once again that same weird tension that had been present in the brig. And rather than make her want to retreat she was simply curious. She knew, especially after Alex pinned that award on that she didn’t need to prove herself to anyone. And perhaps too that meant Luke didn’t need to prove himself to her. Not in the same way at least. “My story is a lot to take. Someone I once knew used to tell people I have more issues than an old-fashioned newsstand. He wasn’t wrong,” she said softly.

He shrugged, “I wouldn’t say you have issues I’d say you’re more like an anthology, with many different short stories.” Luke was left wondering who she was referring to but decided to let sleeping dogs lie. Saying she had issues was in his opinion wrong, and far from the truth.

Pushing her task chair back, Faye stood and took the small step to be able to stand over him. Bending at the hips, she braced a hand on the arm of the chair, letting her head drop in line with his. “But the thing many people never get to see is that I am actually quite a lot of fun,” she whispered before leaning in for a kiss. She just wanted to test it out, see how it was. Maybe it would be terrible and they could just forget the whole thing. But either way, she needed more information before she could proceed.

The feeling of her lips on his wasnt how he imagined it, hell he hadn’t really imagined kissing her at all tonight, all the tension in his body that had built up from the time they first met flowed out of his body. Luke didn’t force the kiss to keep going but instead he allowed Faye to take the lead. The moment was like a breath of fresh air. It was surpsing how someone with such a hard exterior had such soft lips. Was this a bad or good thing he wondered as the kiss continued, the rest of his body didn’t move just his mouth, scared that he’d make the wrong move and scare her off again, the kiss also left him feeling confused. Did she not want a relationship? Did she? Was she just seeing if she liked kissing him? Faye Calloway you are certainly unique.

Pulling back, Faye wasn’t sure what to think. It was definitely a nice kiss. But was nice good enough? She was so used to having things be clear, but since she didn’t know entirely what she wanted, or how she felt about him, it was hard to know. And yet, because of this uncertainty, she wasn’t willing to just leave it at that. But what did any of it mean? He had definitely held back, and she was a little worried that maybe she had said too much, that it was all a bit much for him. And… no. She was overthinking it. She was thinking too much.

She leaned back in, deepening the kiss.
