Was this them being on the same page for once? How novel! With something of a general plan in mind, Faye stepped back to her workstations. “Computer, cancel audio playback.” The music that had since shifted into another song disappeared, leaving them in the quiet lab as she quickly shut down her terminals and closed out her access. throwing the usual extra locks on it.

Luke had almost forgotten about the music playing in the background and as it switched off the room fell into an odd silence.

“Computer, seal lab after exit, authorization Calloway-Omega-Three-Six-Seven-Pi-Nine.”

The computer chirped. “Acknowledged.”

With a nod of approval, Faye turned back to Luke and moved to the door, stepping into the corridors of Deck Thirteen. “Which deck?” she casually. Hers was on Five, his was Four.

~Faye Calloway

He looked up and down the corridor wondering, “Well the holodeck is only a couple of decks up or I think your quarters are close.” He thought about it for a moment, “Then again I’d wouldn’t want to risk someone wanting to see where the party girl went and knocking on the door.” Luke couldn’t really decide. “Ok, my quarters no one ever really comes looking for me so we shouldn’t be disturbed.” He pointed towards the direction of the turbo lift. “Shall we”

She shot him an amused glance. “Sounds good to me.” His comment about the ‘party girl’ was funny, but only because it was a rare thing for her. It wasn’t that they hadn’t done celebrations on Tracken Two (quite the opposite), but it was almost always an excuse for a communal gathering, which was more or less daily life. So it was different than what happened tonight where the attention had focused directly on her. Would she ever be comfortable with that? Likely not. But, she could admit that it hadn’t been that terrible.

Walking alongside Faye after their extremely rocky night and heading to seemingly a good end to it, was a little bit bizarre. A few weeks ago he’d never had dreamt that he would even have so much as an attraction to the woman besides that she was pleasant on the eyes but he wasn’t stupid when he started feeling the tension and chemistry whenever they were near each other and then the brig happened. Her life was at risk and everything led to tonight. He didn’t regret what he’d done because then maybe tonight wouldn’t have happened and maybe he’d already be carted off to the psych ward, she really was the mind bendingly crazy to comprehend but now… he didn’t mind and it honestly made him feel more comfortable.

It was later than she had expected it to be, but then again, she had managed to stick about the party for a longer than she might have otherwise. And by the time she had returned from seeing Alex things had been winding down. The the argument on the hill her then her lab. So as the walked, there was an ease that the quiet of the ship at nighttime offered. Her mind liked to drift at these time, or else she might have been tempted to pick up the pace. Then again, anticipation was half the fun.

He side glanced Faye wondering just what she was thinking, “Penny for your thoughts” Luke asked as they neared the turbolift.

His words trickled on her mind and she replayed them before gazing at Luke as she reached out to hit the call button. Did he want honesty? “Dude, my thoughts are worth more than an archaic penny,” she said with a wicked grin.

“Its just a saying. Luke gave her a sidewards glance, “But you know that already” he wondered if their future friendship? Relationship? Whatever it was, was going to be built on her reminding him of how intellectually superior she was. He let the thought bubble and trickle away no need to get hung up on the details now anyway. The stopped short of the turbo lift and he turned to face her.

She met his gaze, though it shifted to curiosity, as if she was trying to decipher something.

“But if you must know, I was wondering about a tiny error I was seeing in the system report that means I’m probably going to have to go crawling through some jefferies tubes once I’m back on duty and replace a part. Or ask Darach too. Either way it means a bunch of recalibrating. Then I was also thinking about how quiet it is right now and how much I love roaming places at night. There was also a stray thought about my mom and how strange it is to see her so… emotional. She wasn’t like that when I was a kid.”

“You really do thinking about everything and everyone at once don’t you.” He gave a smile as he waved the doors control panel. “You know its kind of endearing and a little bit cute.” So now it was his turn to wind her up, it was endearing and he wasn’t lyeing about that but he wondered if she’d ever been called cute before, she stroke him as the ‘Im not cute’ kind. The again this is what this was, testing the waters and getting to know one another.

Her brows lifted. “Well, that makes you one of a select few I think. And you now know why I sometimes seem insufferable. Ninety-percent of the time it’s not intentional. Pissed off every roommate I ever had at the Academy though.”

The lift doors slid open and Faye stepped in, leaning up against the side.

Luke followed her in and the doors closed behind them, he moved to the back of the turbo lift so he was still next to her, just not as close as they were in her office. “Computer Deck Four Please.” And the lift began to move with a gentle thrum.

She gazed at him, her expression one of open frankness. “And mostly I was trying not to think about how nervous I sort of am. That it’s been quite awhile since I’ve done this with anyone and I’m trying to not let old baggage interfere.”

~Faye Calloway

Now that took him by surprise, Faye Calloway nervous? He thought, ok things were getting a bit weird. “I didn’t expect to hear that” He said honestly, “And like you said this is just casual, no long term solution here, so Baggage? What Baggage? We all have it so let’s leave it at the door I mean unless you really want to talk about it. Im a surprisingly good listener when I want to be. Maybe that would help.” He then added, “I’m nervous too.” Luke hadn’t had so much as a romantic interest since his wife, and the small brief spark with Zef didn’t count because well they certainly never went this far. It was a genuine shock that the person to make him feel himself again, this way would be the person he couldn’t stand when he first joined the ship.

He didn’t know? No, he didn’t. She shouldn’t be that surprised. It was an obscure tidbit that she wasn’t sure had actually made it to the Manhattan. She could simply let it be, but it felt important, like a piece of disclosure in case something shifted and she was no longer able to see this through. Faye took a calming breath in and out, gazing at the opposite side of the lift. “Well, it’s tied to my imprisonment with the Romulans. While I was on my assignment I got involved with someone who I probably shouldn’t have, and unbeknownst to me he was being coerced by the Tal Shiar to target me. After I escaped, he and a couple other friends came to help sort out a situation involving extradition and he abducted me in an attempt to drag me back to Romulan space.” Faye turned her head to look at Luke. “I was barely alive and had just survived a very risky brain surgery. In the end it was proven that he was the one involved in my being captured in the first place and, not unexpected under the circumstances, he took his life. And I loved him, Luke. Even at the end I could be angry with him but I couldn’t quite hate him. He was put in a terrible position and his family would have suffered for his inaction. Nevol is the reason I’m not ready for a relationship. All of mine have been inherently unhealthy and I’m not interested in repeating that particular pattern. Sooo, yeah, I don’t use the phrase baggage lightly.”

~Faye Calloway

“I think you’ve recreated the term ‘baggage’” Luke said trying to lighten the mood, “I find myself apologising a lot for other peoples actions that I have never met or know until not but Im sorry that happened to you.” He paused thinking carefully about what she had said, processing it as images of his own traumas surfaced she wasn’t lying when whatever he had dealt with was only the tip of the iceberg compared to her own and to her friends.

“Well, I can assure you that I don’t plan on kidnapping you,” I cant promise that we won’t fall in love and this all turn out to be an awful mess but I’ll try my damned best he finished the latter only in his mind to be locked away and never spoke out load, likely ever. “Were here!” he said the doors opening he waited for Faye to step out before following along behind her. Luckily for them both, his quarters was just a short distance from the life itself.
