After stealing a glance towards the PaDD next to her to check the recipe, Kiama nodded. “Now we need a large pot. I think Chef Harv said they are in the cupboard next to you,” she said with a hint of doubt in her voice.

“Alright,” Faye said, crouching in front of the lower cupboard and pulled out a medium sized pot. Harv’s stuff was all professional scale so they really didn’t need anything too big. ” Faye stood in a fluid motion and set it down for Kiama.

Once the pot was found and on the stove, Kiama poured some vegetable oil into it and turned the stove on, setting it to medium. As she waited for it heat up, she suddenly exclaimed, “I forgot the rice! We should probably start cooking that as well, I guess?” Kiama felt her cheeks burn as blood rushed to her face again. How could she forget about the rice?

Calloway snapped her finger and pointed at Kiama with a light laugh. “Yes we did, but it takes no time at all. “So why don’t you work on the curry. I got the rice,” she said, hunting for a smaller sized pot to cook enough rice for the two of them. They didn’t have time to soak it, but a good rinse would so the trick too.

“Sounds good to me,” Kiama chuckled and added the onions into the pot in front of her.

Measuring out the right amount of water, Faye moved down and peeked around Kiama, snagging the bag of rice with a grin and set about measuring out what she needed. “So, you’re clearly handy in the kitchen. Where did you learn?”

Now it was Kiama’s turn to hesitate and feel slightly uncomfortable. She knew it was silly, but … She sighed ever so softly and after a couple of moments of silence eventually said a little awkwardly, “We had cook. Something first my grandmother and then my mother insisted on. And for a plethora of reasons I ended up spending a lot of time in the kitchen. Especially after the occupation. Reenan liked having me around and teaching me things, so I helped her a lot. Something my mother wasn’t exactly pleased about, but that never stopped me.” As she talked, Kiama kept her eyes firmly at the pot, stirring the onions in the oil a little while waiting for the right moment to continue adding other ingredients.

Silence passed between them as Faye moved over to the sink to rinse the rice. She was trying to keep her own emotions in check and for a brief moment wished Kiama wasn’t psi positive. There just would be no easy way around this and she wasn’t sure if she was ready for this to be openly known. “Don’t be ashamed that you learned from someone experienced,” Faye said firmly, but her tone wasn’t unkind. “That she was an employee doesn’t make her time with you less valuable.” Faye cast her gaze towards her friend. “I’ve been the employee before,” she said with a smile, though it didn’t fully reach her eyes. “Honest work is a noble thing. The kindest thing you can do is be proud of learning from Reenan.”
