He had the kitchen, she had the ingredients. It was time for hasperat!

Opting for something worthy of dinner with the captain, and dancing, Faye dressed in black leggings, low heeled leather shoes, and (over a black tank) a sheer black sleeveless tunic with a floral pattern in silver that hung low on her hips. Her hair was pulled back into a loose ponytail.

Within 30 seconds of it being 1900 hours, Faye arrived at Cochrane’s quarters with a small crate in hand. She was all but bouncing on her toes with excitement because this was something she had been looking forward to for awhile. Yes, it was taking on a different, and more casual tenor, but the more Faye had thought through her conversation with him after the ceremony, the more she was happy with the outcome.

Shifting the crate to one arm, Faye reached out and pressed the chime.

The door slid open and the sound of music came through immediately. Cochrane yelled form the side of the room “Come in!”. He was seated at the desk in the corner and looked up as she entered and said “Well hello! Set those on the counter and I will be with you in a second.” and he tapped away furiously for a moment and then stood up. “Sorry sorry sorry…”: and he moved quickly to help her. “Damn Fleet bureaucracy. I swear to the all the gods above if I could find a way to power a star ship with reports instead of dilithium, we’d colonize every rock in the galaxy in about three weeks.” and then he looked at her and smiled.

Faye laughed as she moved over to the kitchen to set the crate on the counter. It wasn’t heavy but there were lots of odd and ends and it had just been easier to carry that way. “I always figured if I earned latinum for every time I dropped a sarcastic comment I’m be such a rich woman by now. Reality does suck sometimes,” she said with a grin.

“So. How are we this evening?” he asked inquisitively. It had been a day or two since he had seen her and, although he kept informed of her status, he hadn’t tried to interject himself into her recovery time.

Inside the crate were a bunch of seemingly random vegetables, a small bag of flour and a small jar with something dark red inside. Faye began pulling out the vegetables one by one, setting them out in a line for him to see. “I’m good!” Faye said with a nod. “Starting to feel a bit antsy to be back on duty, so I might see if I can bargain with the counsellor about even part-days for the rest of the week. I get the whole not burying myself in work thing to avoid things angle, but I’m hitting that point where not doing my work is making me more anxious. And that won’t help in the long run.”

“How about you?”

Alex smiled and helped her unpack the crate. “I’m good… surprisingly good for all that has happened. It’s nice to just be able to breathe for a day or two. If dealing with Command is all I have to do for the rest of the week, I think I’ll chalk it up in the ‘win’ column, that’s for certain.” A new song came on and Alex said “Computer, skip.” and the song stopped and then another began. It was a cello piece, not classical by any stretch, but wholly unfamiliar to all but one person in the room. It was an upbeat and high tempo piece… more akin to old Earth rock and roll than actual ‘cello’ music.

Faye always liked it when musicians took an instrument and played unconventional music on it. There was something about it just just resonated with her. With a couple subtle nods of appreciation, she pulled out the jar and set it slightly to the side. “Okay, so we’re going to need a couple cutting boards and sharp knives, two mixing bowls, and two skillets. I am going to assume a well stocked kitchen, but maybe I should have checked first,” she said with a lopsided grin.

Alex played an overly dramatic insulted reaction. “You wound me.” and then he chuckled. “Ceramic knives are in the drawer to your left. Same for cutting boards. I’ll get the rest.” and he came around the island and went to the tall cabinets next to the cook top and began retrieving the bowls and skillets.

“So… hapserat. As many ways to make it as there are regions on Bajor, and that makes it very easy to spoof. But I told you there was a story that went with it, and I feel like I should say up front that I have never taught anyone this recipe. I’ve made it for others before, But I’ve never shared the recipe.”

Alex set the cookware on the counter and then leaned back against the counter right next to Faye, crossed his arms on his chest, and looked down at her. “So why do you want to teach it to me, then?” he asked somewhat softly.
