Cochrane’s face remained relaxed, but his mind went Crap, I really hope this isnt about Faye and Wyatt. I will not be officiating any weddings, thats for damn sure. as his mouth spoke “Hit me. I’m no Counselor, but I will at least give you an honest opinion.” and he took a big sip of coffee.

Bracing her elbow o the table, Shara rested her chin in her hand and tapped her bent fingers on her lower lip. “I’m not expert either, but I’ve had my fair share of time with them.” She inhaled and let out the breath abruptly. “When I spoke in the immediate aftermath of Faye being in the brig, I was worried about what might happen if she was left to her own… darkness for too long. Now things have obviously changed and many of the worries I had are no longer valid, or less likely. But, I’m now worried Faye has gone quite the opposite, which is completely normal after having survived a situation where you didn’t think you would. But with Faye, of course, things are more… complicated.”

~Faye Calloway

‘They typically are with her, true. But why don’t you speak plainly, Shara. Tell me what is on your mind, and if I can help, I will. Are you concerned she is manic? Swinging too far towards the positive and not basing herself in reality? Or is it something else?”

Cochrane

Shara Calloway was someone who could hide anything and everything if she chose to. If she didn’t want you to know how she was feeling, you wouldn’t find out. Simple. But these were not simple circumstances, nor did she have the luxury of hiding. Not here. Not now. “Faye being manic, yes, that’s the driver of all of this. She has a newfound sense of energy and purpose, and that is wonderful, but her ability to be obsessive about anything means that she can throw her whole self into a project, or a person. And Faye is just starting to finally figure out who she is, or perhaps more correctly let herself be who she’s always been but for one reason or another has kept hidden and locked away. Does that sound like a correct assessment from your perspective?”

Cochrane smiled a weary smile, one that said he was thinking more than he was saying when he said “Oh, I would say you have a strong grasp on the reality of your daughter in that aspect, yes. And that proclivity has been a large concern of mine as well.” Especially after Faye and I spoke. he added in his head.

Calloway nodded.

“So what is it you propose? And why bring this to me and not the Counselor? Zef is very good at her job, and with where Faye is at I will admit to a bit of concern as to why you are talking to me and not her.”

At this Shara smiled. “Because there’s only so much any one person can do. While we can voice our concerns to her, at that end of the day Faye is going to do what she wants to do, whether we like it or not. And frankly, she deserves the right to make her own decisions, even if they end up being mistakes. But the one thing about being the long lost mother in this situation is that I’m getting to see Faye in a different light than I might have if we had been deeply involved in each other’s lives all this time. And it means I can see a possible solution to our worries that leaves everything in Faye’s hands.”

Shara leaned forward, gazing deeply at Alex. “Faye needs to put her energy into something productive but not all consuming. I’ve watched her with the garden, and the plants are perfect for her except for one major detail: they can’t be affectionate back. If we’re worried about her throwing herself into situations too much, I think we should give her a reason to keep a little bit back for herself. Which is why I’m proposing I get her a pet, specifically a cat. An animal who she can nurture and take care of and give the exact things that she herself needs. And which can give those thing back in their own way.”

~Shara Calloway

She mentioned ‘cat’ as Alex was taking a drink, and he choked a bit. Putting his hand to his mouth he cleared his throat and then said “Cat? Right… cat. Of course.” OH THANK GOD SHE SAID CAT! he thought, and the relief was apparent in his face. “Ok… a cat. Hmmm…” and he sat back and thought a moment. “Well, if you are looking for my permission, that’s fine… under one condition. That you discuss the matter first with the Counselor and then with Faye before you get one. I want everyone on the same page prior to. Last thing we need is for you to get it and Faye deciding she isn’t ready. Fair enough?”

Cochrane

Shara had watched with amusement. “Well, permission wasn’t quite what I was looking for. More confirmation from a close friend of hers that it was a reasonable idea. But yes, I will talk to both of them first.” She was slightly disappointed as she had quite taken to the idea of surprising Faye with the cat as a gift, sort of a ‘sorry I couldn’t be there, but I’m here now’ sort of thing. But that was her issue and Faye’s needs were more important in this matter.

Tilting her head slightly in a probably familiar gesture, Shara smirked at Cochrane, “What exactly did you think I was going to say?” Her eyes said, ‘fess up because you can’t hide from me’.
