Alex looked at Shara and smiled softly. “Shara… between you, me, Zef, Ms. Naim, Mr. Darach, and Mr. Creed… I don’t think you will lose her. We have her back. And we have yours, too. Okay?”

Cochrane

When she had taken that step of calling Rollo when Faye was in the brig, it had been no less intense for her, but then everything felt more concretely life and death. Here it was too, but of a different kind. And there was just so much of her that was still trying to understand how to be a mother to a grown daughter who clearly needed far more support than she might have had their lives gone so vastly differently. There was a part of her too that resisted showing her emotions to people she didn’t know very well- after all, in her line of work, emotions could very well get you killed. There was a time and place for them. Clearly now though was a time for them. And so as she gazed at Alex and saw the certainty in his eyes, and heard it in his tone, she felt she could trust it. She could share the burden of this fear so that it would never come true. “Okay,” she said finally.

Cochrane simply nodded once in acknowledgement of her acceptance, and then he leaned back and said “So. How do we prevent the crash from being catastrophic? What is our plan to deal with it. And I think it would be naïve of us to assume we can prevent it.”

Cochrane

Calloway shook her head. “No. We’re too late to prevent it. Like I said, she’s already very clearly on a high and she will come down. But how hard or soft that landing is will depend on a number of factors- some we can do something about, others we can’t.” She sighed. “Much like it has for me, a lot of this has felt like life coming full circle, bringing us back to familiar things but in different places in our lives. And that’s good. The distance and space helps. My gut feeling is that Faye is holding on to something or some things that are keeping her from moving forward, and if she could face those, she could truly live her life.” It wasn’t really an answer to his questions, but perhaps the extra information would help them see the picture more clearly.

Alex smiled and looked at the coffee and then took a sip. “Faye living her own life is my ultimate goal. I think that if she can do that… then we are only just beginning to see what she is actually capable of.”

Cochrane

At that Shara smiled. “It’s all I want for her.” Exhaling audibly again, Shara nodded. “Okay, I think we’re already paying as close attention as we need to, but how about let’s touch base with each other if there are any alarm bells going off? We can share those concerns between us and Rollo and act only if needed. I want Faye to have her privacy as she needs it but I am okay with her being upset with me if our concerns are proven to be ever warranted. Better safe than sorry and all that.”

Should I say something? Or let Faye and Wyatt handle it themselves? he thought to himself. Nope. They’re old enough to deal with their own messes without any more interference or input. he decided. “That sounds good. And as long as we have regular communications, I think it will work out… eventually, anyway. At least I hope so.”

Cochrane

Calloway nodded. “Agreed,” For a few moments she just gazed at Alex. “Thank you, for being there for her. I hate that I brought this to everyone’s doorstep, especially hers, but if it wasn’t here, it would have been some other ship, some other officer. And while we know all that intellectually, it’s different emotionally, especially for Faye. Had this happened earlier in her career, on a different ship, I’m fairly certain it would have gone a lot worse than it has. And I know a lot of that is because of you, and your rapport with her. She trusts you immensely and that is no small thing. But I’m sure you’re well aware of that fact,” she said with a warm smile.

Alex smiled back and said “That is a fact I keep at the forefront of my mind everyday. And I promise I will do my best not to give her pause in that.” He then picked up the mug and drained the contents. He looked back at Shara and grinned.

“No orange cats on my ship. That’s a deal breaker. Got it, Commander?”

Cochrane

Shara laughed. “What have you got against orange cats?” she asked with an amused but bewildered expression.
