Faye smiled warmly. “I’ll be around. Not like I have work to do,” she said with a lopsided grin before moving away.

“Well dont be a stranger,” He said with a wave before dusting of his hands and then leaving through the entrance they had come through. Pleasantly happy and dirty Luke made his way back to his quarters.

Stepping outside of the greenhouse, Faye grabbed the two shovels, brushed off all the dirt and headed to the storage room to put them away.

Four days later, Faye was once again working in the garden. She had been by a couple days ago to check on the seedlings but hadn’t stayed long. Today though she needed some serious time to think and often working in the garden helped her sort through things more calmly.

Alex’s words from the other night had been circling through her brain over and over and over again. And the more she thought about it the more she kept wanting to throw up. Once again the two disparate realities were forcing themselves to lie side by side and she was struggling to know what to do. She never wanted to hurt anyone. But that was the painful reality. No matter what someone got hurt. Alex said she wasn’t broken the way she thought she was, but in this moment she highly disagreed. She was an unintentional wreaking ball crashing her way through other lives and right now she hated herself for it.

The ship’s captain wasn’t only on Fayes mind as Luke entered the gardening section of the arboretum. It had been some days since he last spoke or even ran into Faye and a lot had happened all of it bouncing around his mind. He hadn’t let it affect his work performance or trying to integrate into the crew better but he had avoided Faye several times, her mother and Cochrane also.

Kneeling next to her plot, she was digging holes and transplanting the plants from the other day that she had forgotten about. They were little plants that would form a tidy compact border around her plot and was a part of the design she had in mind. The obelisk stood proudly in the middle and would have a flowering vine growing all over it eventually. Right now she wanted to knock it over. So she dug more holes and focused on gently transplanting the seedlings.

Finally though and with the soft persuasion of the counsellor whether its what she meant or not Luke decided to speak to Faye and catch up on his gardening, which had been impossible hard when he was trying to avoid someone who spent a lot of time there. “Need a hand?” He asked standing above Faye a few metres back dressed in the same (though cleaned) clothes as the last time they were here together. He didn’t want to instantly ambush her with what had been on his mind and figured doing some gardening might ease them into the conversation.

Looking up, Faye steadied her breath so she could keep everything calm. She had expected to see him sooner rather than later, but still she wasn’t prepared. Mostly because she didn’t know what to say exactly. Sorry, I think you’re a lovely person but I’m too messed up for you to be around right now? Well, actually that wasn’t too far off the mark and might actually work. “Hey,” she said, sitting back on her heels.

She was back in cargo pants, but was sporting a black t-shirt that said: I garden so I don’t choke people | Save a Life |Send Mulch and had leaves around the text. Her hair was pulled back in her usual tidy french braid. “I’m just transplanting some seedlings. You can help with that? It’s pretty easy. One plant every fifteen centimetres or so and dig the hole only as deep as the plant cell you’re pulling the plant from. These particular flowers only get planted to the soil line.”
