The doors to the holodeck slid open and Cochrane, dressed in light gray pants and a loose fitting blue button-down collared shirt, walked into the black room with yellow cross-hatched lines carrying two cases; one in each hand. One was obviously a guitar case, but the other was bigger… much bigger. So big, in fact, that he didn’t actually carry it, but pushed it along on two wheels on the end opposite the neck.

Stopping and looking around, he said =/\= Computer. Run program Cochrane 5 F sharp-2 E sharp-1 F sharp-1 E sharp-D sharp-C sharp. =/\= there was a soft chirp and and a pause, then a lake appeared. It was a small lake, but there was a beautiful cabin set next to it. The back of the cabin on the lake side was a wide deck built out over the water. A single chair and a small table sat facing the water. Alex smiled and walked to the chair and set the cases down.

He sat and watched the water as a gentle breeze blew across the lake, and he exhaled slowly. He then then turned and pulled the guitar case over and opened it. Inside lay a beautiful instrument: solid mahogany construction, abalone pick guard, a rich satin finish. Hand crafted brass tuning pegs completed the look of a very well maintained and very finely crafted guitar.

Alex picked the instrument up and strummed it, smiling as it was in perfect tune. Then he began to play, softly at first, but increasing in volume slowly as the strings warmed under his touch.

It was about ten minutes later that the door to the holodeck suddenly opened again, revealing the slender figure of a certain dark-skinned scientist. As always her hair was pulled back in an intricately braided updo. But in stead of her uniform or one of the dresses she had worn at different occasions she was dressed in a pair of black thermal leggings and pale pink, slightly oversized sweater. In her hand she carried a triangularly shaped white back with pink and silver stripes. Noticing instantly that the holodeck was clearly in use, she felt blood rush to her face. For a split second she contemplated to just leave without saying a word. But spotting the Captain sitting on the deck, she raised her voice a little instead and said, “I’m sorry for barging in on you like that, Sir. I should have checked first whether the holodeck was in use. Enjoy the beautiful vista.” That said she turned on her heels and made to leave.

He stopped his playing and turned his head and smiled. “Oh, Lieutenant! I’m sorry. Were you slated for being here? I do apologize. Please.. please… you stay. I can certainly come back another time. Not a problem at all.” and he waved her back. “Just give me a moment to pack up and I will be out of your way.” and he began to put the guitar away.

Turning back around and taking a few steps in his direction, Kiama shook her head. “No, not at all. I came here on a whim without even checking if the holodeck is free. Please don’t leave because of me.” With a gesture towards his guitar, she added, “What were you playing, if you don’t mind me asking? It sounded wonderful.” A warm smile tugged at the corners of her lips.

Cochrane paused and said “Oh… well… thank you very much. It was actually nothing, really, just a piece I heard in my head for the past few days. So I thought I’d come here and try to put it together. You are welcome to join me, if you like.” and he motioned her to come onto the deck. He had the computer generate another chair and then he looked at Kiama.

“Thank you Sir,” Kiama replied with a warm smile as she stepped onto the deck.

“Do you play? I’d be happy to have a little session with you, if you are interested?”

After placing her bag next to the chair, Kiama sat down on the chair next to him and then shook her head. “Sadly, I don’t. My mother made me take lessons when I was little. On an instrument similar to a piano,” she said with a subtle mix of emotion in her voice and expression; including annoyance and even regret. With a wry smile she added, “Needless to say that that didn’t go over too well.”

Alex smiled and shook his head. “I know the feeling. Mine made me take figure skating lessons. Blech.” and he laughed. He picked up the guitar and started playing again. “Fortunately I was always allowed and not forced to play. Music can’t be forced… it just has to come out naturally, I think.” and he played a bit more before asking “So what do you do for fun, Ms. Naim?”

Kiama couldn’t help but laugh. Though she quickly pressed her hand over her mouth. Taking a deep breath she quickly collected herself and apologised, “I’m sorry Sir. I’m not laughing at you. It’s just a highly amusing coincidence.” Pointing at the bag next to her she continued, “I came here to give ice skating another try. And I suppose that also answers your question in a way.” She frowned slightly. “When I had dinner with Faye Calloway the other day I realised that I don’t really have what one would call a hobby. I read scientific journals in my spare time and while I do enjoy that, it’s probably not what most people call ‘fun’. So I decided to try things again to see if something strikes my fancy while also working through some underlying issues that, I think, are the reason why I have never been able to find a hobby,” she continued openly and unashamedly.

Alex smiled and said “Never apologize for laughing at something, Lieutenant. Laughing at someone, maybe… but if something makes you laugh, enjoy it.” he said with a smile. He then looked at her and said “It’s a big lake. You want to skate while I play? Then we both get some downtime? I was just about to bust out that big boy.” and he jerked his head towards the much larger unopened case.

Kiama nodded thoughtfully and then shook her head rather suddenly. “Since I’m trying to figure out what I might actually like to do and not feel guilty or selfish for doing something just for myself, maybe I could just sit here and listen, if you don’t mind?” she asked a little hesitantly. Sitting here next to the Captain felt a little strange. He was her Commanding Officer after all and it was deeply ingrained in her that you treated superiors with respect and there was always supposed to be certain professional distance. And yet she knew a little about him through Faye. Not much really, but just enough to tell her that he was not only a good captain, but also a good person. And getting to know him a little better would be nice and probably good for their professional relationship as well. Yet she didn’t want to impose herself on him.
