Luke chuckled, “You’re right on not being paid enough and by my overthinking of the situation. It was just a thought” Thinking back to the other mans comment of the ‘brass will do what the brass wants” Oh how true that comment was, sometimes it required a little descent in the ranks for it all to make sense but this wasn’t one of those times and even Luke could see that.

Shara was still listening to their conversation (she had been quietly polishing off the chowder), though in this moment she had picked up the cup of coffee, both hands wrapped gently around it’s smooth surface, absorbing the heat. Simple things, simple luxuries. So many things in the last few days had converged in her life in unexpected ways. The Delta Quadrant and Faye had always been two entities unto themselves and here they were mixed up and merged. But if she had learned anything in the last couple of years, it was that all she could do was lean into it all. Her own PTSD demanded she take things slowly and with gentleness, but that definitely had become something of a different reality when faced with watching her daughter struggle and suffer all over again, even if this time it had been rather different.

“You gotta be careful about those thoughts, that’s how I ended up in this job,” Walker said chuckling.

Looking over at Shara he noticed her quiet reflection. “Speaking of thoughts, it looks like someone is lost in them. Penny for your thoughts Commander?”

“Hmmm?” Shara said, her attention shifting back to her dining companions. “Oh.”

Picking up his own spoon, Walker took another bite of the chowder.

Calloway was quiet for a moment. “I don’t know. Just a lot of complicated reflection to match a complicated and eventful life,” she mused with a small smile. “It’s strange being here though. I’m not on duty, by the way, so it’s Shara. I’m here for Faye and at the end of the day it’s the way it should have always been. But I keep thinking how things in my life have come full circle in odd ways. It’s… weird,” she said with a small and crooked smile.

Walker nodded. “Things do have a way of coming back around in ways you’d least expect it. In some ways even though the universe is infinite, it is a very small place.”

Luke tried to hold back his laugh, which wasn’t mocking but out of self-realisation, if only they knew just how things had come back around for Luke. “Sorry I was just remembering something that makes what you said shockingly closer to home.” He explained unconsciously and nervously lacing to Shara the person who he hoped would never find out.

Shara quirked her brows in amusement.

“Oh come on now Lieutenant. You can’t throw a statement out there like that, and leave us hanging,” Walker said taking a sip of his coffee.

If his panic had any sign of showing he hid it well, he chuckled if not half nervously. There was no way he was going to tell anyone about this and certainly not in the presence of Shara Calloway. “Oh no, definitely not an ‘over the lunch’ conversation” He said trying to play up the ‘mystery’ and hopefully discourage any further talk about it. “Besides it really isn’t that interesting.” He added finishing his drink and sitting back in his chair.

Uh huh. Sure, she thought. People could be rather transparent when they were trying very hard not to be. The irony of Wyatt’s remarks were such that the thoughts in Shara’s head largely weren’t for lunchtime conversation either. Hell, they weren’t even for close conversation much of the time, in that a lot of it was classified or related to classified stuff. But that was a small bit of it and the rest revolved around a lot of things that were more difficult to openly talk about, and her daughter was at times one of those topics. “We always think that about ourselves. Usually there is something there worth sharing though.”

~Shara Calloway

“That’s true but if I’m not thinking of myself it’s not my story to tell.” He countered, there was absolutely no way he was opening up about Faye to of all her mother. Luke also thought that it was a good time to return to his duties, “I best be getting off. Thank you for the company, we should make this a regular thing. Lunch club.” He joked but if they seemed to like the idea he’d role with it.

Walker leaned back in his chair, eyeing Luke. He knew there was a good story there, he would get it out of him one of these days. Giving up on it for now he reached for his own spoon to see if he could get any last bits of the chowder out of the bottom of his bowl.

“Well if Chef keeps making food like this, I’ll be sure to stop by here more often. Perhaps next time you’ll be up for telling us that story Lieutenant,” he said with a bit of a grin.
