Alex laughed and said “Hugs are great. Impulsive ones are even better.” and he gave her a friendly hug in return. “Besides… we are all family here. If you can’t hug your family, who can you hug?”

Kiama exhaled in relief and smiled warmly at Alex. “Thank you. Not everyone sees it that way. Yet I have to admit that most people on this ship don’t seem to mind. I’m glad you don’t either. Though I do promise not to hug you on the bridge or something,” she said with a gentle laugh and small wink.

Alex laughed and began plucking strings again. “Good. There’s enough gossip on this ship already.” and he smiled knowingly out at the lake.

“Aren’t there always?” Kiama laughed and then asked, “So you offered music lessons. What would be a good starting point. Other than picking an instrument of course?” She felt like she had a decent idea of what instruments or at least types of instruments existed and of course she had memories of the lessons she had to take when she was young. But that’s where it ended.

Alex said “The instrument is the first step. Once you figure that out, I can tell you if I can teach you or if I can’t. If you want to learn from me, string instruments are what I play… although I know my way around the Earth saxophone. Oh… and can you read music?”

Cochrane, CO

“I want to say yes, but that would be an exaggeration of the facts,” Kiama replied honestly. “I know the very basics. Like the higher up a note is on the lines the higher it sounds. The hollow ones are longer than the black ones. Three notes make a cord and you can change any song to make it higher or lower. But that’s pretty much all I know about reading music. Which probably isn’t enough,” she continued with a lopsided grin.

“As for which instrument, I’m honestly open for anything. You suggest harp or violin earlier right? So maybe one of those would be good?” she asked.

“Basics are good, we can build on basics. And as far as what to play?” and he stood up and held the guitar out to her. “Here. Try it out. Lets see what you think. We can try a ton of instruments in here, but might as well start with what we have, right?”

Cochrane, CO

“Sure,” Kiama nodded and took the guitar carefully from Alex. She then placed it on her lap and placed her left hand on the fretboard the way she had seen him and other people do it. She then strummed the fingertips of her right hand over the strings. But since she was only lightly pressing her fingers on random strings on the fretboard it didn’t sound great.

Alex smiled. “Good. Press a little harder here and here…” and he moved her fingers so they were placed correctly, “… yeah. Now, try it. Don’t be shy… strum all the way through.”
