Luke had in his hand the deal which would seal his fate, or in this case, set him free. He’d drafted it when everything first had started but now he was certain this was the right thing to do and after leaving Faye in the arboretum he didn’t see a situation where him staying was a good idea. The PaDD in his right hand feel heavy, but he knew it would take the weight off his shoulders, he’d requested a transfer to the USS Sante Faye… how convenient he had thought but it was the only ship that was looking for a Security Chief.

Standing outside the Captain’s ready room he took in a deep breath and pressed the door chime. All of this would soon be behind, Faye, Cochrane and the Manhattan.

The Watch Officer looked back and said “Sorry, Lieutenant. Skipper isn’t in there. Just went to his quarters. Bet you can find him there, if its important.” and he turned back to the reports coming from around the ship.

Bridge Officer

A little deflated he thanked the watch officer, Cochran’s quarters wasn’t far so it didn’t take long to be standing outside them. Luke wondered whether disturbing the Captain in his quarters was the right thing to do but he also knew if he delayed this any longer he may actually just snap and nobody especially Luke wanted that. He closed his eyes took in a breath pressing the door chime and waited for the call.

The door slid open and Cochrane stood there, chewing something and wiping his hands on a napkin. His uniform top was open at the collar. As he recognized the figure standing in the passageway, he just nodded slightly and turned around walked back inside… but the door stayed open.

The room beyond the door was set up with the doorway in the middle of a large living space. A couch sat below the large window that made up the wall opposite the door, and a low but very sturdy-looking table with carvings of skulls and demonic faces around the border sat in front if it flanked by large chairs on either side. To the right of the door was a desk set so that a person sitting there would have their back in the near right corner of the room which, in turn, was flanked by bookcases similar to the ones in the Captain’s Ready Room. To the left of the door was a small kitchen with a tall table and chairs sat on the door side of the kitchen island which held the sink. Past the sink was a cooking surface and a replicator and cabinets.

In the far left corner, past the door to the bedroom, near the window sat an assortment of musical instruments on stands: acoustic guitar, bass guitar, upright bass, and a saxophone. In the far opposite corner was a small piano and a cello.

Alex walked into the kitchen area and stood in front of the sink, facing the door. He picked up a sandwich and took a bite, watching Luke expectantly.

Luke remained planted, he didn’t expect to stay long nor have an open discussion about his transfer application. He did hate himself for not wanting to wait until he found the Captain somewhere less ‘cosy’ but he’d waited and deliberated enough if he didn’t do this now he might never do it and get someone hurt in the process and to much peoples beliefs that person probably wouldn’t have been Faye. “Sir, I wont take up much of your time but I wanted to hand you these.” He held out the PaDD stills stood to attention, “Its my application for an early transfer.” The ship he had asked for was one of those ‘you dont want to go there as a security officer’ kind of ships, it was a routine science vessel with a small crew compliment and mostly of scientists, security was more of a formality than actually necessary and Luke knew it would probably halt his career for the four years heed serve there.

Cochrane didn’t make a move towards the offered PaDD, he just stood there chewing. Finally he just grunted slightly and then set the sandwich down. He brushed crumbs off his fingers over the sink and then went to the replicator. “Repeat last.” and the soft whine indicated that something had appeared. Turning, he had a plate with another sandwich and a glass of iced tea. He looked at Luke and then said “Take a seat, Lieutenant.” and indicated the chairs by the wholly out of place and severe looking table by the couch. He then walked over and set the plate and the glass on the table in front of one chair, pointed to the chair, and went back and retrieved his half eaten sandwich and half full glass and returned and took the other chair.

At first he wondered if Cochrane was so angry he just decided to pretend or will Luke out of existence but when he invited him in he started to wonder if it was a trap. “Yes sir” He finally replied not wasting much time between the offer and finding a seat to sit at which seemingly had been set out.

“Have a bite. Roast beef, baby swiss, tomatoes and lettuce. Pretty good for replicated. You eat and I’ll take a look at your request.” and he held out his hand for the PaDD.

Handing him the PaDD before looking at the food on his plate, it looked good it really did but he couldn’t help but think if he’d laced it with some truth serum probably supplied by Faye herself to get the full story. “It might come as a surprise since I have only been here for a short time but, I think its right for me.” and Faye he thought finishing his sentence as he popped a tomato into his mouth to at least show he was trying.

Cochrane took the PaDD and opened up the file. He read it slowly and methodically; making approving noises and arching an eyebrow here and there. “Santa Fe… interesting choice.” was all he said, and that was muffled. After he was done reading, he set the PaDD down and picked up the sandwich.

“It’s a good ship, a bit quieter but I dont see why I couldn’t fit in sir” He explained biting into a bit of the beef and not really saying anything else.

“I take it things didn’t go so well when you talked to Faye?” and he took a bite of the sandwich and leaned back, chewing slowly with his eyes on Luke. There was no condemnation in his question… no sense of ‘I told you so’, and his face held a look of detachment but with a hint of regret in his eyes.

Cochrane, CO

“That’s an understatement.” He replied sighing, “We broke it off that’s what didn’t go well, the worst part is…” He shook his head, “I’m not doing this are you going to sign the transfer or not sir. You’ve already meddled enough into my private life and look where it got me, my daughter asked if I was replacing the whole her mother left with Faye but as amazing as everyone seems to think Faye would never fill that hole, but she was different and maybe could have filled something else.” He shoved another tomato into his mouth. “So?” He asked nodding towards the PaDD.
