Luke had in his hand the deal which would seal his fate, or in this case, set him free. He’d drafted it when everything first had started but now he was certain this was the right thing to do and after leaving Faye in the arboretum he didn’t see a situation where him staying was a good idea. The PaDD in his right hand feel heavy, but he knew it would take the weight off his shoulders, he’d requested a transfer to the USS Sante Faye… how convenient he had thought but it was the only ship that was looking for a Security Chief.

Standing outside the Captain’s ready room he took in a deep breath and pressed the door chime. All of this would soon be behind, Faye, Cochrane and the Manhattan.

The Watch Officer looked back and said “Sorry, Lieutenant. Skipper isn’t in there. Just went to his quarters. Bet you can find him there, if its important.” and he turned back to the reports coming from around the ship.

Bridge Officer

A little deflated he thanked the watch officer, Cochran’s quarters wasn’t far so it didn’t take long to be standing outside them. Luke wondered whether disturbing the Captain in his quarters was the right thing to do but he also knew if he delayed this any longer he may actually just snap and nobody especially Luke wanted that. He closed his eyes took in a breath pressing the door chime and waited for the call.

The door slid open and Cochrane stood there, chewing something and wiping his hands on a napkin. His uniform top was open at the collar. As he recognized the figure standing in the passageway, he just nodded slightly and turned around walked back inside… but the door stayed open.

The room beyond the door was set up with the doorway in the middle of a large living space. A couch sat below the large window that made up the wall opposite the door, and a low but very sturdy-looking table with carvings of skulls and demonic faces around the border sat in front if it flanked by large chairs on either side. To the right of the door was a desk set so that a person sitting there would have their back in the near right corner of the room which, in turn, was flanked by bookcases similar to the ones in the Captain’s Ready Room. To the left of the door was a small kitchen with a tall table and chairs sat on the door side of the kitchen island which held the sink. Past the sink was a cooking surface and a replicator and cabinets.

In the far left corner, past the door to the bedroom, near the window sat an assortment of musical instruments on stands: acoustic guitar, bass guitar, upright bass, and a saxophone. In the far opposite corner was a small piano and a cello.

Alex walked into the kitchen area and stood in front of the sink, facing the door. He picked up a sandwich and took a bite, watching Luke expectantly.

Luke remained planted, he didn’t expect to stay long nor have an open discussion about his transfer application. He did hate himself for not wanting to wait until he found the Captain somewhere less ‘cosy’ but he’d waited and deliberated enough if he didn’t do this now he might never do it and get someone hurt in the process and to much peoples beliefs that person probably wouldn’t have been Faye. “Sir, I wont take up much of your time but I wanted to hand you these.” He held out the PaDD stills stood to attention, “Its my application for an early transfer.” The ship he had asked for was one of those ‘you dont want to go there as a security officer’ kind of ships, it was a routine science vessel with a small crew compliment and mostly of scientists, security was more of a formality than actually necessary and Luke knew it would probably halt his career for the four years heed serve there.

Cochrane didn’t make a move towards the offered PaDD, he just stood there chewing. Finally he just grunted slightly and then set the sandwich down. He brushed crumbs off his fingers over the sink and then went to the replicator. “Repeat last.” and the soft whine indicated that something had appeared. Turning, he had a plate with another sandwich and a glass of iced tea. He looked at Luke and then said “Take a seat, Lieutenant.” and indicated the chairs by the wholly out of place and severe looking table by the couch. He then walked over and set the plate and the glass on the table in front of one chair, pointed to the chair, and went back and retrieved his half eaten sandwich and half full glass and returned and took the other chair.

At first he wondered if Cochrane was so angry he just decided to pretend or will Luke out of existence but when he invited him in he started to wonder if it was a trap. “Yes sir” He finally replied not wasting much time between the offer and finding a seat to sit at which seemingly had been set out.

“Have a bite. Roast beef, baby swiss, tomatoes and lettuce. Pretty good for replicated. You eat and I’ll take a look at your request.” and he held out his hand for the PaDD.

Cochrane, CO

Handing him the PaDD before looking at the food on his plate, it looked good it really did but he couldn’t help but think if he’d laced it with some truth serum probably supplied by Faye herself to get the full story. “It might come as a surprise since I have only been here for a short time but, I think its right for me.” and Faye he thought finishing his sentence as he popped a tomato into his mouth to at least show he was trying.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt, CoS

Cochrane took the PaDD and opened up the file. He read it slowly and methodically; making approving noises and arching an eyebrow here and there. “Santa Fe… interesting choice.” was all he said, and that was muffled. After he was done reading, he set the PaDD down and picked up the sandwich.

“It’s a good ship, a bit quieter but I dont see why I couldn’t fit in sir” He explained biting into a bit of the beef and not really saying anything else.

“I take it things didn’t go so well when you talked to Faye?” and he took a bite of the sandwich and leaned back, chewing slowly with his eyes on Luke. There was no condemnation in his question… no sense of ‘I told you so’, and his face held a look of detachment but with a hint of regret in his eyes.

Cochrane, CO

“That’s an understatement.” He replied sighing, “We broke it off that’s what didn’t go well, the worst part is…” He shook his head, “I’m not doing this are you going to sign the transfer or not sir. You’ve already meddled enough into my private life and look where it got me, my daughter asked if I was replacing the whole her mother left with Faye but as amazing as everyone seems to think Faye would never fill that hole, but she was different and maybe could have filled something else.” He shoved another tomato into his mouth. “So?” He asked nodding towards the PaDD.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt

I meddled? Huh… ok.” and he leaned forward and… picked up the sandwich. Leaning back, he was looking at Wyatt as he slowly chewed and swallowed.

“Luke.” he said, laying his arms on the arms of the chair, “A big part of me wants to sit here and try to explain things to you. Try to get you to see past yourself. But…” and he shrugged, “… the last time I did that you told me to f$%k myself, so I won’t waste my breath or your time. But… since this will be the last time I have your undivided attention… I want to say something to you.” Alex took a breath and then he leaned forward.

The security chief or soon not to be security chief was grateful that Cochrane didn’t want to or couldn’t be bothered to try and talk him out of it and explain things it was a little beyond that now anyway and for Luke, he just needed to move on.

“I’m sorry, Luke. I’m sorry that things turned out as they did for you. I was really hoping I was wrong… for both of your sakes. And I am really and truly sorry it happened the way it did and that you got hurt.” and he leaned back, eyes still on Luke.

He hadn’t expected to hear that and he didn’t expect his response, “I’‘m sorry too.” It was honest and hurt to say but he’d let himself down and Cochrane who had tried to warn him.

“And Im sorry you feel you have to leave. I know that you are tired of my input, so I’ll just finish by saying I think you are making the wrong choice. But…” and he paused and held his hands out to side. “Know what? Never mind.” and he reached for the PaDD, typed in a few commands, and then closed it down and set it back down on his side of the table. “There. Done.”

It had felt as if a weight had lifted, great now let’s go. He thought but Cochrane quickly put a stop to that.

Cochrane looked at Luke and said “Please. Finish your sandwich. Now that that is settled, maybe you’d like to talk about your future on the Santa Fe? Security Chief posting there may be a blessing in disguise, right?” and he leaned back with the glass of tea and crossed his leg over his knee. “Older ship so its not going into harm’s way too much. Even as another Science vessel, I think they stick to more practical science than the theoretical stuff like on here. Cataloging and the like. Should give you plenty of time to study if you are looking to apply for any off-ship training, right? Maybe try to get a slot in Command School?” and he took a sip of tea.

Cochrane, CO

So Cochrane was playing guest fine, the deed was done and Luke could at least accept his hospitality. “It’ll have his perks I’m sure and it’ll have his boring days but, maybe the change will be good for me.” He lied, the first thing he’ll do is try and get a better posting down the line but he just had to leave Manhattan for the sake of his sanity. “Who knows maybe I’ll get more into the science stuff unlike I did here. Got caught up in unnecessary things.” Another lie, Faye was certainly not unnecessary. “Do you know Captain Weare?” He asked making polite talk and referencing the Sante Fe’s Captain.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt, CoS

Alex shook his head. “Not personally, no. By reputation. I did some research on the Command Staff of other science vessels when I was given the Manhattan. To see if there was anything that needed to be done differently or different prioritizations. Weare… well… let’s just say his record didn’t stand out too much. He seems to be very… practical. Risk-averse, I think is how best to describe him. But that shouldn’t matter too much to you. He’s approaching mandatory retirement age, so you will only serve under him for a short time, I think. ” Alex took a sip of his tea and looked out the window.

Thats what Luke was hoping for, and with a new Captain sometimes come crew he or she was more familiar with which gave his the perfect chance to jump to a more favourable ship. He ate another tomato, the food was good that he couldn’t deny Cochrane.

“Sometimes I wish I had played things… I don’t know… safer, I suppose is the word. Like you are.” and he looked back at Wyatt. “But.. we make our choices and deal with the consequences, I guess.” There was a look in his eye that was different. It wasn’t so much regret… or even sadness. It was more… disappointment.

Cochrane, CO

He shrugged deciding not to concern himself to much of the disappointed look, “The way I see it though is a lot of decision were made for me.” From day one he’d been made out to be the antagonist and while he didn’t disagree in many cases Cochrane couldn’t sit there and say he had no hand in the decision Luke made. He’d never have broke things, if they ever started from Faye if he had continued to belittle Luke. While he knew the Captain meant well neither of them went about it the right way, maybe they were too alike for either to admit. “You know how to put on a spread” He said changing the conversation, Luke didn’t want to be the last thought of the Manhattan to be full of resentment.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt

Cochrane looked at Luke for a long time in silence, and then finally just smiled and shook his head. “Thanks. I try.” and he stood up and picked up his empty plate and glass. He carried them to the recycler and dropped them in, and then began to close up his uniform top.

Moving to stand between Wyatt and the door, he said with a friendly smile “Well, Mr. Wyatt… I wish you the best in your future. I don’t want to run you off, but I have a new Security Chief to find, and I don’t want to make the selection hastily. I’m sure you of all people understand how decisions made in haste have the potential to ripple and have unintended consequences for others.” and he extended his hand towards the soon-to-be-former Security Chief.

Luke wondered if there was some sort of hidden code in the Captains words but shrugged it off to him being his usual cryptic self, “Yes well thankyou Captain, though be it short I have learned a lot here.” He held out his hand and took the Captain invitation to shake his. “There are no transports leaving for a few weeks so you won’t have to find anyone immediately.” He knew because he’d looked to book the first one out.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt

Cochrane shook his hand and smiled, laying a hand on his shoulder and gently ushering him towards the door. As the door slid open, Alex released Wyatt’s hand and said “Well, I’d like to give time for you to do a proper handover to the new incoming CoS, so that’s a good thing” and as Luke moved into the doorway, Cochrane smiled again.

“Well, Mr. Wyatt. Thank you for your candor and honesty. I’m sorry this didn’t work out for you. I really was looking forward to having two Wyatts on the Manhattan. Shame, really. Such is the nature of the universe, I suppose.” and he stepped back to let the door sensor slide the door closed.

Cochrane, CO

This stopped the soon not to be chief of security dead. ‘I really was looking forward to having two Wyatts on the Manhattan’ the words ran through his mind before he then decided to just ask. “What do you mean sir?” He asked turning around in the door way.” He knew of course what it meant which also meant he could never go through with his transfer.

  • Lt Luke Wyatt

Cochrane said simply, but with a look of something in his eyes, “Your daughter? She is being assigned to the Manhattan and will be arriving in… two weeks I think. She really is quite brilliant. I think she will be able to do great work here. I have no doubt she will make you very proud.” He cocked his head to the side slightly and his eyes narrowed just a fraction. “I would have thought this had been discussed between the two of you.”
