Alex nodded and said “Good question, and the answer is muscle memory. Try this, may I?” and he reached out for the instrument.

“Of course,” Kiama replied as she handed Alex the violin.

Taking it and putting it in place, he said “Highest note.” and played a long, continuous note. Moving his fingers down the neck, he said “Lowest note.” and repeated the same action, this time with a low almost rumble. “So then you just practice doing this.” and he began to play scales… up and down and back again. Stopping, he handed the violin back to her. “That’s how.”

“So practice, practice, practice,” Kiama smiled and placed the violin back on her shoulder again. “That makes sense. Let’s just hope I remember the right positions for my fingers and the bow,” she added as she placed her fingers on the strings again. She tried to copy what Alex had just done, but more than once the placement of her fingers wasn’t correct. Sometimes she could tell that she was off. But other times she couldn’t.

Alex nodded in approval. “By George, I thinknsge’s got it.” he said with a smile. “Very nicely done. Now… formal instruction. First, you learn scales. That will teach you fingering and proper position, as well as where the notes are produced. I’ll send you the programs that will help with that. Once you cane play your scales forward and backwards, then you and I will begin to practice together. That sound good to you?”

Lowering first the bow and then the violin, Kiama nodded. “It does. Thank you S- Alex,” she replied with a wide smile. Not in her wildest dreams had she ever imagined that she might find herself enjoying to learn how to play an instrument. Yet here she was. Though admittedly she was pretty sure that it had a lot to do with her present company. While she still struggled a little to call him by his first name, she found that she liked talked to the Captain. There was something about him that made her feel at ease. Another thing she hadn’t expected to ever be the case with any commanding officer. Which probably showed that she had still a number of things to learn. About Starfleet, the people on this ship and about herself.

Alex smiled and said “Excellent.” and he glanced at the chronometer discretly placed on the deck railing. Frowning slightly, he said “And alas, that is the time I have for today.” and he looked at Kiama as he packed up. “But please, enjoy. The view is lovely and if you want an instructor ask for ‘Tutor for violin 7-8-4’. Very nice program, she is very patient.” and he chuckled.
