Abbey had been bouncing off the walls since she finally got approved to head out to the Delta quadrant and even more so she’d been granted permission to be aboard the USS Manhattan. It wasn’t the fact her father was posted there but it was just the fact that the Manhattan was the ‘New Frontier’ and her study into Synthetic Biology was similiary revolutionary, not unheard-of but just never utilised to make it worth while.

She had arrived a few hours and after settling into her quarters she’d made her way to the one place she was extremely excited to see, the Svience labs. She was wearing her long grey coat which she’d used in place of her white long coat it made her feel more ‘science’ and ‘less open your mouth medical’ stepping into the main science lobby she looked around. It may have been more prudent to find her father and actually tell him she’d arrived but that could wait for now.

    Synthetic Biologist

“Ooh, I love the labcoat,” a voice spoke, coming from a diminutive officer in Engineering Yellows. Diminutive described her well, as the slender alien barely reached a height of three feet. She resembled a mane-less Caitian, fur in a coloration pattern similar to a Siamese Cat. She held a PADD tucked under one arm, while the other hand held a wooden mock-up of a prosthetic arm, with wires running up the length of it. She waved the wooden hand at Abbey and grinned widely. “I’m Kaia. Welcome to the Delta Quadrant!”

Kaia, Eng.

Abbey turned and faced the voice and smiled at Kaia, “Thankyou! I’m glad to have made it that journey is a killer on the knee’s!” She stretch out her legs out, “Is that a prosthetic?” She had walked the gap between them, one of Abbey’s researching fields was the application of Sythentic biology into creating prosthetic, well prosthetic would be the wrong word because if her theory was correct she could completely regrow a limb using DNA from the host and from a regenerative species like a worm. Her eyes were aglow with the idea.

Kaia glanced at the wooden arm, then nodded with a smile. “Yeah,” she replied, “It is. It’s part of a project related to prosthetics I’ve been working on. We’re trying to make a functional prosthetic that doesn’t include electrical parts or static-inducing components, for people who need to work with electrically-sensitive equipment. The closest we have is taking a regular modern prosthesis and covering it in a static-blocking glove. Which is functional, but it’s harder to get a prosthetic into a glove than it is with a natural arm.” She enjoyed talking about her project.

Kaia, Eng

Abbey eyes lit up, “What if I told you that the very field I am in is all about doing just that well not just that but I think I could be on the same line as you and your work, maybe I could even have a solution for you, given some testing of course,” synthetic biology was all about just this, and she hoped with the Engineers approval she’d have her first project! Beyond what she had already planned in her mind.

Kaia’s eyes widened, pupils dilating with surprise as her ears swiveled to directly face Abbey, her attention now fully on this scientist. “I mean, I’d be all in for that!” She tucked the wooden prosthetic next to the PaDD. “I’d love to hear more about any sort of ideas you have.”

Kaia, Eng

Abbey somewhat blushed at the sudden interest the way Kaia’s ear twitched towards her but she welcomed the sudden increase in attention, “Well, have you ever heard of Synthetic Biology? It’s a multi-disciplinary science that really just means that we look to create new biological parts, devices or systems and look to redesign them by introducing biology that wouldn’t typically co-exist for example, someone who has lost a limb or a limb never developed. A course in which we could look into would be to introduce DNA from a species which has regenerative properties so for example a Salamander by restructuring your DNA and cells it it theoretically possible to regrow that limb.” She smiled, “Its a lot more complicated but the basics is there.

Kaia scratched her elbow absently while listening to Abbey speak, tilting her head and glancing down at the prosthetic. “Growing like… a real arm?” She let out a breath, impressed. “I looked into it, but it wasn’t really well developed enough to be practical,” she focused her gaze on her own right arm, stretching it out and spreading her fingers out. There were two things odd about the hand. Firstly, and most notably, there were only three fingers on the hand. Secondly, the fur seemed to not have as much sheen and.... life as the fur on Kaia’s other hand. She twisted her hand palm-up, and Wyatt might notice almost a plasticky texture on Kaia’s palm - which had pads similar to those on a cat.

Kaia, Eng.

Abbey examined the hand to some who weren’t looking you could almost say it was a perfect replica but Abbey’s job wasn’t to make replica’s it was too revolutionise science. “Well, I must say that this is probably one of the best I’ve seen and I’ve seen a few” She stopped herself from touching it incase Kaia found it rude. Smiling, “I’ll pull up all my research notes and contact my old colleagues maybe we can get something written up at least preliminary before I start running simulations and then moving onto trials.”

“I have personal stakes in this prosthetics research, as you can see,” Kaia gave Abbey a wide grin. Ever since Luke had walked into her workshop while she was working on the arm, she’d felt less nervous about sharing her prosthetic with people. “The fur really helps with the immersion. People just see a furry arm and don’t think about what’s underneath. Only really notice when I make it obvious.”

She noticed Abbey almost reaching out to touch her hand and grinned. “If you wanna examine it, I have Lab time in one of the Engineering labs. You should come, call it research for your own project. I don’t really feel like taking it off here in the middle of a busy room,” she grinned, showing off sharp teeth.

Kaia, Eng.

Abbey blushed at the sight of the teeth and she smiled back, “Oh yeah of course that sounds like a good idea! I can even bring some of my own papers so you can decide a cause of action if we get that far into it of course. Most of my work is already in the ship’s library but I keep my most recent projects on PaDDs so they’re air-gapped from any attack, trust me it happens more than you think!”

  • Dr Abbey Wyatt, PhD

“All my work is in here,” Kaia gestured to a wide band around her left wrist. “It’s like a PADD, but it also has a bunch of other functions. Commbadge, clock, personal signal enhancer, Universal Translator, mobile interface… I use it to translate human writing into my own language, which is so helpful I can’t describe it,” she explained.

Kaia, Eng.

Again Abbey found herself impressed by the woman, “Wow that’s pretty awesome! Is it one of your own design or something else? I could do with one of those myself, better than walking around with a bunch of PaDDs!” She studied the wrist band and could certainly see one on her hand arm, though she may change the design a little to suit her own style.

  • Dr Abbey Wyatt, PhD

“Not my design, although I wish I’d invented something so impressive. It’s technology from my world. All Galdori officers are equipped with one, and we have been for a couple centuries. I don’t think I’d be able to get you one, unfortunately,” she smiled sheepishly. “And I still carry around PaDDs,” she shrugged, bringing attention to the PaDD tucked under her arm along with the wooden arm. “Just fewer than normal.”

Kaia, Eng.

Abbey tried not to appear saddened, “Well dont leave one laying around near me I may end up taking it apart and reverse engineer it!” She joked looking at the PaDD,s regardless of the idea of having such a handy piece of equipment tickled her brain. “So what is it like, your home planet the archives dont have much one them” And she would know because she’d spent a lot of time looking.

  • Dr Abbey Wyatt PhD

Kaia glanced at the time. Hmm, she had time to chat. The engineer glanced around and, spotting an empty stool, clambered up onto it. “It’s a pretty great place to live. Different places on Galdor are different. My home, the city of Ba’slu, is hot and humid, with lots and lots of trees. Really massive trees. As a planet, Galdor is very vibrant and full of plant life, but there’s a lot of climate variation depending on where on the planet you are. Korusia is home to the coldest place I can imagine, World’s Edge.”

She frowned slightly. “I’m surprised there’s not much on it in the Archives. Maybe because we’re all the way over here in the Delta Quadrant and they don’t think it’s all that relevant to have info on my people he-…” she cut herself off, and there was a short pause before she whirled around and gave Abbey a suspicious glare, “Why did you research my planet?? We’ve only just met like… two minutes ago.”
