“Perfect.” Cochrane replied. “And make sure you are briefing your staff on scan data and whatnot. We don’t know what’s out here, so anything they can pick up, we may be able to investigate. Never know what we may find, right?” he said with a grin.

“Will do,” Kiama said, grinning back at the Captain. “Who knows maybe we’ll come across a new spacial phenomenon or a species that lives in space!” she continued with a twinkle of excitement in her black eyes. “There is so much out there we have never seen, never even dreamed of! A scientists dream!”

“And so much we have yet to learn about. It’s staggering, almost. But… thats why we are here. To explore strange, new worlds. To seek out new life, new civilizations. And to bol-” and he was cut off by a message incoming. =/\= Bridge to Captain, you asked we tell you when the Event Horizon had cleared the final supply shipment, Sir. =/\= Cochrane nodded and tapped his commbadge. =/\= Cochrane here. Thank you. =/\= and he looked at Naim.

“Sorry. What were we talking about?”

“About boldly going where no one has gone before,” Kiama replied with a wide smile. “Those lovely far away places where certain people will not come to visit and try to drag you back home,” she added with a soft laugh that didn’t fully mask the stern expression that had briefly flitted across her face. “I can’t wait to see what we’ll find out here,” she finished, glossing over her small slip.

Cochrane peered at her for a moment and then said “Lieutenant… the word has a nice ring to it. I remember when I made Lieutenant. I was really proud of myself. It was that moment that I realized how important what I did was. How I was a reflection of something much bigger than myself. That I was truly a part of something special… and wholly immense. It was intimidating, but it was also exciting.” and he looked her directly in the eye.

Kiama held his gaze and had just been about to ask ‘how so?’, but when Alex continued talking she remained silent.

“And it was when I realized that no matter what others outside of this -” and he waved his hand broadly at the ship area, “- thought… or wanted for me… I was not beholden to them. I had sworn an oath as an Officer in Star Fleet. And that oath supersedes anything anyone else may have planned for me. So… Lieutenant… I would let go of any concern of ‘someone’ trying to drag you anywhere. You belong with us. And no one can take you anywhere without your consent. To even try is to bring down the wrath of almost every person on this ship. Because no one screws with one of our own.”

“You do not know my mother,” Kiama practically blurted out and then cringed. “I’m sorry. I sound like a teenage girl who is afraid of her mother’s reaction.” Kiama shook her head and exhaled audibly. “In all seriousness though, you do not want to cross her path.” She knew she sounded harsh, maybe even a little mean, but while she understood why her mother was the way she was and that she did what she did because she thought it was the best thing to do, it didn’t eliminate the pain she had caused her only child.

Cochrane cocked an eyebrow at her. His gaze held hers with his ice-blue eyes locked onto hers. “No, Lieutenant…” he said calmly but with a certainty that could be felt. He leaned forward and said in a tone that had given Klingons pause “She most certainly would not want to cross mine.”
