Wiping her nose on the sleeve of her sweater, Faye eyed him and her expression slipped into a smirk as she burst out laughing. “Mushroom Boy. Oh… I so have to call him that, just to see his expression,” she said with a hearty chuckle followed by a sigh.

“I’d be wary of the context when you bust out with that particular term of endearment.” and he gave her a smirk and a wink.

She blew out a breath. “The fear has kept me alive Alex, more times than not, and I think the murky water I’m trying to wade through right now is realizing that where I’m at in my life now is not one where every mistake is utterly devastating. Because there have been large chunks of my life where was that was true. And with everything from the past coming to the forefront right now, I’m just trying to separate out what was true then versus what is true now. If that makes any sense?”

Alex nodded. “It does… but it’s also your armor, Faye. And where you are at now, thet armor could do more to harm you then help you. I’m not saying that you shouldn’t be scared… I’m saying don’t be scared first. Try it with him. Just him. The rest, hang on to until you can sort out what you can. But he wasn’t part of any of that… and it sounds like you already have decided what you want to do, but you just aren’t doing it because… well… that’s what your ‘fear habit’ is telling you.” and he sat forward and scooted across the floor to her and put a hand on both of her knees.

Whereas touch used to make her uncertain and wary, now it felt grounding. Faye inhaled a slow and deep breath. She would definitely need to do yoga later. She could feel all the tension in her body and that stuff had to go somewhere. And in the dimness of the mushroom house, she felt safe, cocooned. Though she was hesitant at first, she unfurled her arms, reached out and rested her hands on Alex’s.

“It’s time to stop surviving, Faye… it’s time to start living.”

She had been saying that that was her goal ever since she had sat in Dr. Rinker’s office on the Atlantis and it would be easy to chide herself for not doing so. But that would be a lie. There were so many examples of her living for the enjoyment of it lately. Dinner and dancing with Alex. Dinner with Kiama. The bloody garden they were sat in right now. She had set down roots here on the Manhattan and because those roots looked often different than others might expect it would be easy for her to discount them. But she didn’t.

And yet, Alex was right as well. Taking small steps while attempting was very different than leaning into the whole experience of living. “The door to the cage has been open for awhile. I guess it’s time to find out what’s on the other side,” she said softly. her body felt flooded by something and while she couldn’t pinpoint what it was, it was definitely overwhelming.

Looking towards the doors to the last room of beds, Faye exhaled. “He left something for me to plant. The other staff said there’s a vial with instructions that were marked for me and he said reminded him of me. I’m going to go find out what exactly that is. But thank you, Alex. I know I’ll probably never tell you that enough, but I am always grateful. And I do want to hear your story even though you so skillfully evaded it,” she said with a little grin.

Alex smiled and said “I’ll make you a deal. You give me a promise that you’ll call him tonight… and keep calling till you get him on the line and can talk directly to him… and I’ll tell you my story. Deal?” and he held his hand out to her.

Again that sweep of something hit her, but Faye took his hand anyway and gave it a shake. “You got yourself a deal there Cochrane.”

“When you leave, do yourself a favour and meander through the rest of the garden. And that corner raised bed closest to the path just past the greenhouse is mine. It’ll have all sorts of hot things growing in it to make that spicy brine for hasperat,” she said with an excitement gleam.
