“I did,” Kiama replied, her smile and whole expression suddenly turning a little shy, maybe even slightly embarrassed. “I tried one of the truffles earlier and I think they are good. But not guarantee for the pavlova,” she continued as she put the two containers away before sitting back down at the table.

“Well, I think I’ll save the chocolates for later and have my pavlova now as you suggest and I’m very grateful you went through all the trouble. Can’t say I’ve ever made chocolates, but I’ve eaten my fair share,” Faye said as she took her pavola and plucked a berry from the top. Fresh berries were one of those things she really loved.

“You are very welcome,” Kiama smiled and picked up the small spoon. But before helping herself to a first bite of the dessert, she said, “I must admit that I have a sweet tooth and I had a phase while I was at University of Betazed where I made a lot different types of dessert. Chocolates in particular. I often create a bit of a mess while doing so, but it’s worth it. Not only because I like sweets, but also because you can make other people happy with it.” She gave a small shrug and then dug her spoon into the pavlova, making sure she got a berry as well.

Faye grinned. “Nothing wrong with that,” she said , digging into her dessert.

A little while later, she helped Kiama clean up and was getting ready to leave. For a moment Calloway just gazed at Naim thoughtfully, but there was an undercurrent of happiness to her calm appraisal. “Thank you, Kiama. I used to warn people I was a terrible friend as a way to… keep them from getting too close.” She snorted. “And probably to excuse any bad behaviour on my part later. It’s not just being uncomfortable with people either. But at the end of the day I didn’t think I could cope with much more loss. I’ve had so much of it in my life, that that distance meant I could lose anyone.” She shrugged. “Silliness. But I’m glad you’ve been patient while I navigate what is very confusing and sometimes messy for me.”

Smiling gently at Faye, Kiama nodded softly. “It was a way of trying to protect yourself. It’s only understandable and I don’t think there is anything silly about it,” she said thoughtfully. “I can’t promise I’ll never do or say anything I might regret later. You have seen my temper more than once. But I’ll always be there for you. I care a great deal about you, Faye, and I’m really glad to call you my friend.” With that she crossed what distance there was between them and gave Faye a hug.

More than just allow the hug, Faye returned it. Bit by bit over the last little while she was feeling more at ease with the contact, or rather the emotions usually connected with it all.

Kiama smiled as Faye returned the embrace. It was one of those changes in Faye that hadn’t gone unnoticed by Kiama and it made her happy.

Pulling back, Faye smiled. “Dinner again next week? I can almost guarantee you I’ll have lots to talk about,” se said with a laugh.

“Deal,” Kiama replied with a soft laugh and took a step back. “Good night Faye. Take care my friend.”
