Her hands returned to their place around her mug, her demeanour shifting slightly, though it was more pensive than anything. For several moments she said nothing, trying to find the right words. The tears welled more fully. “Happy. Terrified.” She gave him a rueful smile. “I know I’m hella neurotic and I’ve got a shuttlecraft worth of baggage. We… have a lot of navigating to do. That part doesn’t scare me so much, but… you were right before, the night of the award ceremony. I have changed. If this were even a year ago, I would throw myself at him and make myself whatever he wanted or needed me to be so I could feel certain he wasn’t going to abandon me. But that’s not what’s happening here. It’s incredibly intense, how I’m feeling right now, but also… calmer?” She shrugged. “I don’t know how to explain it exactly.”

“It feels right. Like… it just fits.” he said and smiled, but not at Faye. At something in his mind.

She watched him as he so neatly summed it up, but as Faye studied him, she saw that telltale expression.

He looked at her and said “It feels like it’s supposed to feel that way. No conditions, no terms. It just is. That sound about right?”

A slow nod. “I don’t know how he deals with conflict yet, so I can’t say how we’ll do on the days when I inevitably do or say something to piss him off, but that uncertainty doesn’t scare me. Because I know he sees the part of me that so many people skip over. The true part of me. And that’s the part he loves.”

Faye leaned forward, leaning on the desk as she gazed at her friend. “Is that how you feel? With Zef?”

He cocked an eyebrow at Faye but gave her a half-smile. “This isn’t about me and her, now is it? But in answer to your question… sort of, at least for me. And I doubt she feels the same, so it’s a moot point for now. So back to you and Mushroom-Boy… any plans on moving forward? Dealing with the long distance?”

Calloway inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled through her lips. Her nerves suddenly crept back in. “I know before you said that R&R wasn’t an option, and later I knew I just wanted to run away from it all. But… that’s not what this is. He wants us to meet up in a month, on Event Horizon for a week. I don’t know much more than that other than he’s booked a couple rooms for us and made the plans on his end.” She looked down and stilled her fingers that were fidgeting. She wanted this chance and at the same time, she could feel that surge of unease creeping in. “I’ve got plenty of leave built up, even after my medical leave recently. And I’m already formulating a plan for my systems. I trust Darach with them. And I’d be close by if I was needed at all, and Gods forbid there was an incursion, I can do stuff remotely…” She abruptly shut her mouth. Leaving the ship had seemed an impossibility before. But everything was stable and she had a plan and most importantly she could trust those she left behind not to screw it all up. She would never be able to fully put down her fear for the ship and shipmates though. That was going to go with her everyday she existed.

Alex waited to be sure she was done, and then said “Well, let’s see what we have in store.” and he tapped the desk interface and brought up the Command calendar. “Okay… so we have a new nebula to scan, a potential Class M planet to locate and sweep with probes. Then we have a meeting with representatives from the Korf system. After that, a diplomatic mission to… Gravien XII. That puts us right at that time, so barring any unforseen delays…” and he looked at her and smiled, “… I dont see why you taking some time would be an issue. Submit the request and I’ll sign off today.”

Faye nodded slowly. “Okay,” she said. Uggh! Why did she sound uncertain? This was what she wanted, right? Yes, she did, but…?

Rising to her feet, that familiar unease moved under her skin and the only way to cope with it was to move. So she paced, but rather than the frantic sort of pacing she was known for, it was a steady pondering sort of pacing. Why? why do I feel this way. It’s not Dag, or at least not him directly. I LOVE him, even if I don’t yet know entirely what that means. So what the hell is it?

Finally she turned to Alex, her eyes wide. “I’veneverbeenonadate!” she spat out, because forcing herself to draw in some air. “I’m just about to turn thirty-nine and I’ve never been on an actual date. And I’m supposed to do a whole week?” She blew out a breath. She was overwhelmed.
