The invitation had been sent days earlier.

‘My dearest Zef,

I would like to invite you, formally, to a dinner in my quarters, seven o’clock, two nights from now. Dress is Cocktail. I look forward to seeing you then.

Yours,

Alex’

He had spent the past week planning the night. Harv had prepared a fine and simple meal. Alex had the perfect wine. He had soft music playing in the background, and a single table for two was set up in the middle of his quarters. A tall, white candle burned and the lights were low.

Alex was dressed in black slacks with a relaxed but well tailored black suit jacket over a deep burgundy shirt, but no tie. His hair was brushed and he wore the cologne she liked best on him. He paced back and forth waiting for the chime, and tried without success to calm his nerves. He stopped and looked in the mirror. “Relax. What’s the worst that could happen?” he said to himself and the face in the mirror gave him a look that said *Do you really want to know?”

Alex

When she’d received the invitation, Zef felt a flutter of excitement in her belly. A formal request. She found herself smiling with anticipation as she mentally went through her closet for something to wear. Nothing was just right. Oh lovely, that meant she could look through the ships catalog of evening choices and wear something new.

So it was that on the evening of the dinner, she stood outside Alex’s quarters in a black, corset style top with peplum and demi sleeves, with matching pencil skirt and strappy heels. Fairly vibrating with curiosity, she reached out a hand with pale, pink nails and rang the chime.

—Zef

Cochrane checked himself in the mirror one last time and said “Ok… here we go. Slow is smooth… smooth is fast.” and he turned and went to the door. He pressed the switch and the door slid open…

Alex stared and then smiled. “I don’t know how you do it, but you look more beautiful every time I see you.” and he leaned forward and kissed her cheek softly. “Please… come in.” and he stepped back and held out his arm, beckoning her through the door.

The formality was just different enough from his regular greeting that it kept Zef off guard.

He watched her walk through, his eyes taking in every last inch of her. He knew her, knew her body… all of it’s curves, bends, sensitive places… but tonight, he saw her in a wholly different light. Like he had yet to know her in that intimate a fashion. He smiled and said “I’m glad you came. And yes, I know our track record for not getting to dinner.” and he chuckled as the door slid closed behind him. “So it’s a single course, and dessert is later. I just wanted to make tonight… special. Because I hope it will be.” he added cryptically, but with a smile. He walked up to her and placed his hands delicately on her hips and gently pulled her close. Smiling at her, he kissed her lightly on the lips and then said “That dress is everything, by the way. You have good taste.” and he grinned.

Alex

“Of course I came. Spending time with you is my very favorite thing to do.” She answered his kiss, purposely holding back most of the passion. Tonight they would make it through dinner! “I didn’t know what to think when I got the invitation. Why is tonight special?” Then she looked worried, white brows drawing down slightly. “Oh, Alex, have I forgotten something?”

Alex chuckled and said “No, darling… you haven’t forgotten anything. Tonight is something… quite new.”

He looked so handsome in the black suit—and a suit for dinner in his quarters? Zef kissed his jaw and the corner of his mouth. “Well, whatever the reason we’re all dressed up, I like it. You look so handsome tonight.”

—Zef

“Why thank you.” and he gave her a small bow and a grin. “So… some wine… maybe a dance if you are feeling adventurous… and then dinner. I have something important to tell you. Nothing professional… personal in nature. How does that sound for an evening’s event calendar?”

Alex

“It sounds wonderful and I’ll take you up on the dance.” It would be another ‘first’ for them as they’d never danced with each other before. Zef looked around as Alex poured the wine. Something big was definitely in the air, but their surroundings and his demeanor told her it was a good thing. So why was she so anxious about it?

As he handed her a glass, she looked at the table. “So, can I ask what’s for dinner?”

—Zef

He touched his glass to hers gently and said ‘Steak, rare. Vulcan radish salad. And dessert is a variation on Creme Brulé.” He took a sip and drank her in with the wine. The smile hadn’t left his face since she entered, and he felt foolish for being nervous. Yes… she is it. he thought to himself.

Alex

“Well that sounds delicious.” She sipped the wine. “All this preparation and thought put into a quiet night.” Zef stepped into Alex and kissed him languidly. “You really know how to make me feel special.” For the briefest of moments, she rested her forehead against his cheek, then pulled away, taking his glass and setting both down on the table. “Now, how about that dance?”

—Zef

“Oh, I thought you would never ask.” and he winked at her. His left hand took her right, and his right hand went to her waist and he pulled her near, but not touching, him. =/\= Computer, play ‘All of Me’ by Billie Holiday. =/\= and there was chirp followed by the sounds of a piano and saxophone as the song began. Alex looked at her and began to lead her through a slow, graceful dance around his quarters.

Alex

She was extremely pleased to find that he was a very good dancer, the hand on her waist guiding her when she needed to pass beneath his arm in a simple twirl. She had no problems following his lead. On her home world, she’d been told she was talented when it came to dancing. Of course, dancing on Baj was a little different than what the norm was on Earth, but it still meant she had rhythm and proper form. “This is going to sound a little strange, but its nice to be this close to you—connected to you completely in a way that doesn’t involve sex.” She felt a slight blush warm her cheeks. “Don’t get me wrong, I love it when we’re naked and involved, but this is intimate in a different way.”

—Zef

Alex smiled at her and said “I recommend you hang onto that thought for later.” and he winked and then spun her gracefully out and back, and then dipped her slowly back as the song ended. He slowly lifted her back up and kissed her… but this kiss was somehow different than previous ones. The passion was there, the desire… but that was tempered by something else… something deeper. His fingertips touched her cheek and he pulled away slowly. He touched his forehead to hers, eyes closed, and softly said “We had better eat, or our record will remain unbroken.” and he laughed softly and opened his eyes to look at her.

Alex

She laughed with him because her own body was stirring with desire. Time for a break, time for food. As she sat at the table in the chair he indicated, Zef wondered what the night would bring. “I’ve always known that at some point it would happen, but its kind of sad to break that particular record, isn’t it?”

Alex pulled out her chair and helped her forward and kissed her shoulder as he stepped to his side.

Once again, she tasted the wine and set the glass back on the table. She reached for his hand. “So, is Harv bringing it in or are you hiding it somewhere?”

—Fin

“The advantage of being the Captain…” and he tapped his breast pocket twice and a swirl of lights appeared on the table and vanished leaving the meal. “… I get all the impressive toys.” and he chuckled. He sat down and raised his glass to her. “To you, Zef. The most amazing woman I have ever known.” His eyes reflected the candle light and he looked at her in a way he hadn’t before.

Alex

Zef clapped her hands like an excited child when the transporters familiar blue sparkles hovered over the table. “Oh Alex, how decadent!” She was still grinning when he toasted her. One pale hand reached out to caress his cheek. “I don’t know what’s gotten in to you tonight, but this is all very romantic. I almost want to pinch myself to make sure it isn’t a dream.” She picked up her wine glass and tapped it to his. “To us.”

—Zef

Alex inclined his head to her slightly and said “To us, indeed.” and he kissed her hand before releasing it. “Now… to dinner. I want us to eat and enjoy… and then talk. Unless you want me to tell you what tonight is about now.” and he smiled broadly.

Alex

“Its your surprise, so you choose the time. If it would be better here at the table, that’s fine, but if it would be better in bed…” here her cheeks flushed a bit and her eyes sparkled. “Well, actually, everything is better in bed with you, but…like I said, its your choice.” She felt like a girl again, the flutters in her stomach and the way her heart was racing off and on, things she hadn’t felt in quite some time.

—Zef

Alex smiled and said “Then let’s eat.” and he began to slowly cut his steak. He watched her as she prepared her first bite and then he simply said, very softly, “I love you, Zef.” as the bite was halfway to her mouth. His eyes sparkled and he looked at her, and the sincerity of his words was perfectly clear… although there was a small hint of trepidation as well. It was a significant step. He just hoped that step was being taken with her.

Alex

She froze with the bite still in midair, did a hard swallow and tried to say something but no sound came out. The meal was forgotten, the knife and fork found their way to the plate and Zef took Alex’s face in her hands and pulled him in for a kiss of a different kind. It was the first acknowledgment of something bigger, of something that wasn’t supposed to happen if she thought back to their first conversations.

When their lips parted and she looked at him, he saw her eyes were shiny with a hint of tears. “We weren’t supposed to get serious about each other, remember?” But there was no disappointment in her voice, only wonder.

—Zef

Alex smiled and put his hands on hers and said “Oh, I remember. But that doesn’t change the fact that I am in love with you. So I guess I can say ‘Captain’s Prerogative’ or something if you need an excuse for me to love you more than I am quite simply and sincerely in love with the most amazing woman in the galaxy. And I wouldn’t change one second of anything that brought me to this moment. Right here. With you.” and he put his forehead against hers and said “I know what we said… but I can’t change how I feel. And I wouldn’t if I could, Zef.”

Alex

She left her chair and perched on Alex’s lap. The dress was too tight to allow many ideas, but at least they could be as close as clothes would allow. In truth, Zef had never allowed herself to seriously entertain the idea of loving him because that had been the original agreement. Something easy and relaxed with no commitment. Fate was a funny old thing though. It didn’t really care what plans you made for yourself, it played by its own rules and made things happen when it thought it was time.

So…he loved her.

It was an amazing thing to hear and an incredible emotion to feel. And that’s why Zef felt terrible that she couldn’t say it back to him yet. She needed time to allow those feelings to sprout within her. “I don’t know what I did to deserve you, but I’m really happy that I did it. You are a remarkable man, Alex, and handsome too. There’s no one else I’d rather be with.”

—Zef

Alex looked at her. “But… you don’t feel the same, do you?” he asked softly. He didn’t look hurt. Instead he looked pensive. Like he had done something wrong… or at least not right.

Alex

Zef felt her eyes water and her throat tighten. “I don’t know. For months I’ve cautioned myself to keep my heart out of it. It’s been very difficult at times, but once I put my mind to something, I get it done. And there are so many things we still don’t know about each other and about our different ways of life.” She thought immediately of the Degansa contract Anisara and Brom wanted her to enter into with them. It was totally accepted on Baj, even thought of as an honor, but could Alex accept something like that?

“Please don’t feel badly, Alex. I want to be with you, its why I chased you until you finally gave in.” A single tear ran down her cheek. “I just need a little time to lose the restrictions I put on myself, that’s all.”

—Zef
