A goofy grin slipped onto her face. “I was telling my friend Kiama that it was just as well that we didn’t overly plan this trip because I would have over-thought everything,” she said with another laugh. It was like a giddiness had swept over her body.
But as always, Faye’s mind was working n the background. She eyed his room and then turned back to him. “Okay, at the risk of sounding paranoid, have you swept your room at all since you got here?” She had hers but Faye wasn’t going to assume others were as paranoid as her. Stepping off the ship had been one thing, but the reality of being off the ship and the safety the Manhattan provided her was quite another. And given events in her life recently she felt rather justified in that paranoia. She still had to tell him about the new stuff with Intelligence, but she hadn’t wanted to do that over the comms.
Dag smiled and said “Swept? No. Buuut…” and he stepped away from her and went to the bedside table. He picked up a small black pyramid that had some kind of electro-static mesh at the pinnacle. “Here. I took the liberty.” and he smiled and put it in the palm of her hand.
Faye plucked the device out of his hand and gave it a good look-over with a slightly squinted eye.
“It’s a audio-optical signal disruptor. Affects all sound and light waves by mirroring them and sending them back in a loop in thirty nanosecond bursts… but amplified at 100x. Shorts out recording and eavesdropping devices. I bugged the CIO on the Athena and he and I came up with it. Happy first day anniversary.” and he laughed.
Rather spontaneously, Faye reached up on her toes and planted a kiss on his cheek. “Good man,” she said brightly. “I’d get you to pass along that kiss to the Athena’s CIO but that could get awkward fast,” she said with wink as she set it down on the bedside table.
Feeling more at ease, she smiled at him despite the seriousness of this moment. “It’s harder being off the Manhattan for reasons that have nothing to do with you, Dag. After everything that has happened, there are still elements within Intelligence that think I’m a liability.” She tapped her head. “I might always be. And I’m not going to let them dictate the rest of my life, but… this is the first time I’ve been off the ship since everything went down,” she said as she moved back to him and slipped her arms around him. “I’m a little on edge, but I’m so very happy to be here at the same time.”
