“Faye,” Kiama said gently. “He knows you and he loves you. I’m sure you could show up in rags or the most hideous costume and he’d still find you beautiful and sexy. Let me tell you something from experience: A dress can look absolutely amazing or sexy, but if the person wearing it feels uncomfortable in it, then it doesn’t look great at all. Whereas someone can wear the plainest clothes you can imagine and feel comfortable and they can look like the most beautiful person in the galaxy. So all we have to do is find things that you like and feel good in, okay?”

Faye nodded. She knew a part of her anxiety was that she simple hadn’t had a lot of feedback in this regard. A life in Starfleet and being rather introverted meant people usually saw her in uniform, or in the case of the Manhattan, her gardening ‘uniform’. “I’ve never been a person who looked in the mirror and thought anything specific about their looks. I’ve never really considered myself pretty, or not pretty, except for a notable period in my life more recently. I just don’t think about it. But there have been a couple times when felt really beautiful, and unfortunately, they are kind of complicated memories. I want to capture that feeling but without recreating those looks. Because I think that would be a bad thing.”

“I’m sure together we can find something that will achieve exactly that,” Kiama smiled. “Feelings and dresses are two things I’m confident I can help with.

Faye gazed at Kiama and smiled deeply. “You’re a good friend,” she said softly.

“You are as well,” Kiama replied gently, her smile and voice warm and full of love for her friend.

Looking at the dress it wasn’t bad at all, but something about it wasn’t right. She tossed it over the arm of the sofa. “That one is out. Shall we grab something from the replicator. I’m actually really hungry.”

“Sounds like a good idea. I had lunch, I think, at some point today. But either way, more food will be good,” Kiama replied a little sheepishly as she stretched out a hand to help Faye up if she wanted the help. Not that she needed it, but she always found it a nice gesture. “And while we eat, maybe you can tell me more about the times you felt beautiful so I have a bit of an idea what we want to go for and also what we want to avoid. And of course I want to know more about Daggum and what the two of you have planned for your week together,” she continued.

Faye took her friend’s hand and rose to her feet. “Well, strangely enough, no specific plans. He’s booked us two rooms at the hotel-type place there, so kudos to him for not putting that pressure on us. And I think if we had made a bunch of plans, I would have spent that last few weeks driving myself crazy with anxiety. If you think I’m overthinking packing, imagine what I’d do with plans,” she said with a laugh.

“I can see what you mean,” Kiama replied and laughed goodnaturedly. “And it means you two can decide together and do whatever you like. Including not leaving the hotel room for a whole week,” she added and wiggled her eyebrows while a mischievous grin played across her dark features.

Moving over to the replicator, Faye looked over her shoulder. “I’m feeling like a chicken Caesar salad with lots of garlic toast. What are you feeling like?”

~Faye Calloway

“Oh, that sounds really good. Though, I feel like having a risotto with mussels and shellfish tonight,” Kiama replied as she followed Faye towards the replicator.

“Yum! Help yourself,” Faye said as she ordered her dinner and stepped aside.

Turning the conversation back towards Faye’s vacation wardrobe, Kiama asked gently, “When you think of the words beautiful and sexy in relation to yourself, what do you see in front of your mind’s eye?”

~Kiama Naim

“I don’t!” Faye said with an open laugh. as she set her tray on the dining table. “And I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. I’ve just always been the hard, scrappy kind of person. If I was anything, I’ve been dangerous.”

Kiama nodded thoughtfully as she followed Faye towards the dinner table with her own tray.

Taking a seat, Faye seemed to ponder this. “Those that try to get past the outer wall and start something romantic with me often are, at least I’ve felt, drawn to the edgy, dangerous side of me. The one that can punch out an enemy between kisses. That sort of thing. It’s sexy in its own way, but that’s not the whole of me.” Faye lifted her gaze to Kiama’s. “I like the softness I’m feeling lately. The one that Dag makes me feel. But I think we can both agree I’m not the frills and ruffles kind of soft. I just don’t know how to exactly find that middle ground. I don’t know what that looks like. If that makes sense?”

~Faye Calloway

“It does,” Kiama replied as she sat down opposite Faye. “And I agree, ruffles and frills aren’t what I’d go for for you either. Maybe some lace here and there, though not in the frilly, girly sort of way,” she mused, her head tilted slightly to the side as she mustered Faye intently as she had never seen her before.

“And there is definitely some middle ground there. I’d even say a lot of middle ground. I actually think I have an idea or two already,” Kiama grinned as she took a first bite of her risotto.
