Lifting her own glass, she gave him an incredulous look. “Cheers. You really are full of those lines, aren’t you,” she said as she tapped her glass to his. Shara’s expression shifted to worry. “But to be clear, I’m not complaining. You can call me amazing any time you see fit,” she said with agleam in her pale eyes.

Though she hadn’t asked for it, he had been spot on with soup. There was something comforting about a soup and a sandwich- simple food that kept your warm and your belly just full enough. Shara took half of her sandwich and dipped it into the tomato soup before taking a bite.

Micah smiled broadly as she dipped and said “Thats my girl…” and mirrored the sandwich in soup combo. “My mom taught me to do that. This was one of her all time favorite meals, right here.” and he took a bite. He chewed slowly and looked at her, watching her eat.

“Same,” Shara said quietly. She almost left it at that but couldn’t quite help adding, “She always said it was the only civilized way to eat a grilled cheese.”

“If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?”

Chewing gave her time to think but really the answer was simple. “Well, when I was younger I would have said my father’s drinking, then later long after Tracken found itself in the DMZ, I would have said that I would have sent Faye to safety with my brother, and then not soon after that I would have said leaving the colony to go help the other Maquis cell so I didn’t end up stranded in the Delta Quadrant on a Starfleet vessel I didn’t want to be on, but…” She shook her head and had a spoonful of soup. “None of it. My father drove me away from home and it was a few years later I met Ed. And we had a great life life together, and best of all we got Faye out of the deal. I have many, many regrets in my life, but I live with them knowing that any one change meant that Faye might not be alive today and I wouldn’t be here to see her come into her own. And that is worth any regret that comes my way,” she said more insistently than she intended, but she also didn’t apologize for it. She did shrug and take another bite of her soup.

“What about you?”

Micah chuckled around the bite of sandwich in his mouth and then swallowed. “I think about that a lot… what could have been. And I don’t have a kid to give me that… anchor. That justification that everything I done or had done to me was worth it ‘cause of them. So I guess if I had to change one thing? It’d be having a kid. ‘Course that means changing the fact that I hadn’t ever met the right woman for that little endeavor, too. So I guess I’d change a few things… wouldn’t change you, though.” and he grinned at her and took another bite.
