Micah chuckled around the bite of sandwich in his mouth and then swallowed. “I think about that a lot… what could have been. And I don’t have a kid to give me that… anchor. That justification that everything I done or had done to me was worth it ‘cause of them. So I guess if I had to change one thing? It’d be having a kid. ‘Course that means changing the fact that I hadn’t ever met the right woman for that little endeavor, too. So I guess I’d change a few things… wouldn’t change you, though.” and he grinned at her and took another bite.

Shara grinned and dipped her sandwich again. “I almost remarried, years ago, after we returned to the Delta Quadrant. I was still just young enough that I could have had another child, if I had wanted to, but…” She shook her head. “I knew Faye was alive and out there somewhere. Believing she was dead nearly destroyed me. And I tried to bury all of that by throwing myself entirely into the first relationship I let myself have after knowing Ed was dead.” She gazed at Micah intently. “Being a widow really sucks sometimes, but the worst part is trying to figure out if you’re just rebounding or if what you feel is real. I never did marry Reid and there’s been no one serious since.”

“I came close to marriage one time.” he said around a bit of sandwich before swallowing. “Marissa. She was school teacher. Super smart. Super sweet. Great legs.” and he smiled at Sha and chuckled. “Proposed. She said yes.” and he looked down and shook his head. “Then the war happened. Her colony was bombarded by the Dominion.... no survivors. I was deployed on Krassus.” His words were plain, not hurt or regretful. He had come to terms with that decades ago. “Saw some vids of the attack. Last image of her I could ever find she was getting kids into a shelter.” and he looked at Sha and shrugged. “Not much use against seismic torpedoes, though. Hasn’t been anyone serious since her, either.”

It was easy- this back and forth between them- and often in these sorts of conversations people apologized for the hurt the other had experienced. But Shara didn’t feel that compulsion and she suspected neither did Micah. Perhaps it was being in the middle of their lives and already having lived so much. Perhaps it was the combination of their personalities. Whatever it was, all she did was nod. It was a nod of acknowledgment, of acceptance of what he was sharing. An understanding borne of knowing about Krassus. She might have been in the Delta Quadrant at the time, but afterwards when Intelligence beckoned she had learned everything there was to know about the Dominion War and most of it had been terrible.

Dipping her spoon into the soup, she turned to gaze out at the stars. “It’s unsettling being here, in the Delta Quadrant. It’s a different area of space and under very different circumstances, but I can’t shake the feeling that if I stay here too long, despite wanting to be here for Faye, that I might not ever leave.”

Micah brushed off his hands and looked at her as he chewed his last bite of sandwich. He nodded slightly and then took a drink. He put his elbow on the table and his hands together and said “Like you can’t leave? Or that you won’t leave?”

Not long after she had been recruited and formally accepted a commission, Shara had once had an arrogant intel agent she had been working with tell her she had been lucky to have missed the Dominion War, as if she and the others on the Voyager had somehow escaped some perilous fate that everyone else had endured. Back then she had rightfully dismissed him as being a jack@$$, but that didn’t mean his words hadn’t stung more than a little. It wasn’t as if those seven years traipsing their way haphazardly across the Delta Quadrant has some how been a luxury cruise. They hadn’t skirted anything. And just as Faye was having her own past come full circle, so was Shara. It left her uneasy.

When she finally let her gaze shift back to Micah, Shara didn’t hold back the fear in her eyes. “That I won’t, but not because I chose it. Ed used to tease me about always needing an escape plan. I have one for here- I have several, actually. And as much as I am fully willing to step in the line of fire to protect Faye, it feels like it would be a cruel punishment for the Delta Quadrant to be my final resting place.”

~Shara Calloway

Micah looked at her seriously and said “That ain’t gonna happen. I won’t let it. Got it?” and he took her hand in his and squeezed it.
