Cochrane looked at Ensign Baht and then to the crowd. “Ensign Baht, it is with great pride and even greater appreciation that I announce that, by order of Star Fleet Command, you are hereby promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, effective immediately.” He opened the small box and showed the contents to the newly promoted officer: one full and one empty pip rank insignia. “Now I don’t want to spoil the line of that jacket with these, so I’ll just give you the box.” and he smiled. He then turned back to the crowd.

“In addition, Lieutenant Junior Grade Baht is also recognized for his exemplary service and courage during the events on Graven XII. It is my honor to present you with the Golden Nova Medal for Exemplary Performance.” Cochrane opened the case and removed the medal. As he pinned it Baht’s jacket, he said softly “But medals always make a jacket stand out, don’t you think?” and he smiled and stepped back and began clapping as the applause began in earnest.

Putting her plate down on the closest available surface, Kiama clapped hard and beamed from ear to ear. The promotion and medal were definitely well deserved and she was really happy for her friend.

The counselor joined in the applause. Bhat was a fine officer in her opinion and she liked him. It was wonderful to see him get some recognition for the difficult position he’d been placed in during their last mission.

She grinned as she was near Walker at the bar, a comfortable distance from the large group. As everyone else clapped, Faye did the only thing that felt appropriate at the time: she stuck two fingers between her lips and let off a loud wolf whistle. Decorum was for… others.

Ensign, no, Lieutenant Junior Grade Baht was at a loss for words. He had never expected a promotion, much less a medal. Had he really earned them on Graven? He had only uncovered ancient medical records, hidden from some ghosts, saved a researcher, and shocked a man back to life… well, maybe he could figure that these were rightly awarded after all. Still, he was just a medical officer. Shon wasn’t in it for this, he was there to help people. Although, the current rush of emotions did feel good, there was no denying that.

Finally Shon squeaked out a “Thank you, Captain,” before turning and giving a bashful wave of appreciation to the crowd. He scampered off the stage and back into anonymity as quickly as possible, but his chest was puffed out a little further to display the medallion on his breast.

“Thank yourself, Lieutenant Junior Grade. You earned this. And I expect that much more from you from here on.” Cochrane said with a grin as Baht turned to leave the stage.

Commander Calloway chuckled to herself as she watched the proceedings from amongst a group of people she really didn’t know at all. Her experience with a formal ceremony had thus been limited to her daughter’s award ceremony recently and the large gathering they had had after the Voyager had made it back to the Alpha Quadrant. Other than that, promotions and awards for her had consisted of a handshake and a ‘good job, Calloway’ followed by the handing over a box. And that had been (and still was) perfectly fine with her. But as Shara looked over the crowd she realized something slightly uncomfortable: she was envious of these people. Not of the ceremony, but of the crew themselves. She hadn’t had a crew in a long time. It had just been here, sometimes a handler, and on slight occasion a working group. But a crew? She had almost forgotten what that was like.

Cochrane gave the crowd time to respond before motioning them to quiet down. “Warrant Officer Walker Darach, please join me on the stage. And someone block the exit so he doesn’t run, please and thank you.” he said, looking directly at Darach and grinning.

Setting his glass down on the bar, Walker turned and pointed a finger at Faye. “I see how it is. You and I will discuss this later,” he said with a smirk.

Faye laughed and returned the smirk, her grey-green eyes lit up with mirth. “Gotta stick together…”

Walking towards the stage, he stepped up besides the Captain. “Don’t worry about blocking the doors Captain, I’ve already rigged the transporters. It’s quicker anyways.”

Cochrane looked at him and said quietly “Good thing I had Security remove your systems access and voice id when you came in, then.” and he gave the Warrant Officer a wink.

Turning to the assembly, he said “Most of you know Warrant Officer Darach. One or two of you even tolerate him.” and there were more than a few chuckles. “But most of you don’t know that without Mr. Darach, most of what we take for granted on this ship we wouldn’t have. Operations is an overlooked discipline… and it is essential to not only our ability to do our jobs, but to our very survival. And Mr. Darach does that discipline well. Some here even owe their lives to this man and his abilities. Therefore, by order of Star Fleet Command, it is my great honor to promote Warrant Officer Walker Darach to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer, effective immediately.” and he turned and handed Darach a small black box, inside of which sat Chief Warrant Officer rank insignia. “Congratulations, Chief Warrant Officer Darach. You have the thanks of this crew… and me personally. We could not do any of this without you.” and the crowd cheered and applauded.

Walker was slightly taken aback, he was never in this for the promotions, in fact they had to practically pin him down for the promotion to Warrant Officer. But this, out of the blue, it had caught him off guard. It was nice to know that someone could still pull one over on him every now and then. “Thank you Captain, your trust in me is greatly appreciated.”

Walker pocketed the box and smirked slightly, “Now if you will excuse me, I have to go see about putting a few more back doors into the system.”

Chuckling he stepped down from the stage.

Kaia clapped in congratulations to those who had gotten their promotions. She was glad for them, although a little sting in the back of her mind wondered what she might have been able to get up to if she hadn’t had her arm broken. She still wasn’t entirely sure what had happened afterwards. Something about the ship plummeting towards the surface. She let out a long breath, then put her smile on again. It wasn’t the time for those doubts.

Faye whistled again before clapping, smiling widely. Walker had been another one of her unexpected new friends and she was proud of him. He worked hard and he had a good head on his shoulders, something she greatly appreciated.

Jack clapped politely as he sat next to Celina, the coat now draped around her like a trophy from a hunt. “All I am saying is you didn’t need to tackle the man and pry the coat off of him. You don’t even like the coat! I can’t take it back for the money I paid, so what if I gave it away?” Jack said as he grabbed the drink in front of him as he began to sip slowly.

“That was two hours ago when I said I didn’t like the coat. I suddenly developed an… affection…for it.” Celina was always terrible at straight-up lying to Jack. She could sell the white lies but when it was a full-blown, in your face, I am bold-faced lying to you lie, she could not maintain eye contact as evidenced by the way she was looking at anyone but Jack as she talked.

“No, you HATE the coat. Like you made it clear you wanted to burn it, that young waiter now is going to have to slink back and tell everyone the XO’s fiance’ is a madwoman! I am going to have to explain that no, you are really a sweet-loving woman… but they are not going to believe me.”

“Madwoman,” she raised an eyebrow as she clapped just as politely as Jack but with a bit more vigor in her motion. It echoed a bit more and slightly made her palms tingle. “Oh, they have not seen a mad woman or they clearly don’t understand the lengths at which a Latina crazy can go. You know as well as I do that there are at least seven levels of crazy. Tackling that waiter was barely a two and if he had just taken it off as I suggested in the first place I would not have had to shove him in the kitchen and rip it off his body. If he had just complied it would not have gone so bad for him.”

“Besides getting the coat back was just a way for me to get my daily massage back on our honeymoon. If you think I was not going to find some way to recoop the cost of that pimp coat think again. An opportunity arose for me to get our money back. You know my cousins Juan, Juan, and Marco,” she paused knowing full well Jack knew who she was talking about. “Well, their dad Jorge has a thing for fur like my mom has a penchant for feathers. He saw the coat and fell in love with it. Juan, Juan, and Marco already agreed to buy that monstrosity for Father’s Day…for,” she took a long drink, and said softly under her breath “for thirty-seven hundred credits.” Lifting up her personal communicator she showed Jack the stream of digital messages that were under a small snippet video of Jack’s back adjusting the collar of the coat before they left for the party in the mirror in the bedroom. All the sound was muted to hide her initial reaction to the coat. Instead, Jack looked as if he were professionally modeling the coat for some holo ad especially with all the filters Celina had in place instead of getting ready for a promotion banquet. “If they ask we took a loss.”

Celina Rodriguez

Walking back over to the bar he picked up the fresh glass the bartender placed in front of him. Picking it up he raised it to the bartender as a thank you before turning back to Faye. “Do I have you to thank for this as well?”
