“And usually there is nothing wrong with having the same item pulling double, or triple duty. But in this case what if we hit upon a perfect storm? The converter was hit by to many situations at once, and in an effort to protect itself it shut down…

“In which case we need to nail this down quick because it’ll fry my system if it keeps going. And if we got into real trouble I don’t want to worry that the parts won’t hold up the system.”

“Did you check to see if the converter was actually fried? Or if it was just locked up?” he asked suddenly. The question was if a simple restart of the system would be enough to reset the converter back to operational status, though that would be the easiest answer.

Faye nodded. “Not fried, and I already tried a reset, but…” Again her mind worked through multiple tangents and she shifted back to her screen. Her hands began to fly over the console, her brows furrowed in concentration. “Can you pull the rates before and after?” she said, code beginning to flow again. But rather than the overview, she had gone deeper into a subprogram and was pulling up a few sequences that she was sudden’t suspicious of. Or rather, though they could be tweaked in tandem.

“Sure, give me a sec,” Walker said as he pulled up the records from right around the incident. “Okay, it looks like everything was within normal limits, though it looks like there was a slight harmonic fluctuation… But everything was within spec. But at the point of the power spike… The power levels tripled.”

Faye growled under her breath. That should not have happened. Simple. But they had a cause. A fix might be trickier though.

Walker let out a low whistle. “I’m not surprised your equipment had an issue with that sort of swing. I’m not sure much would be able to handle that.”

“Do we have an obvious root? What was feeding power and which area did it come from?” That would take a bit to find, but meanwhile she was looking through her code again.

“I haven’t told you this yet, but that time the conduit blew up in my face? Those burns? That was what the Tal Shiar did to me while I was their prisoner for nine months. Stimulated parts of my brain to make me feel like I was on fire. Recovering from that was what I had done prior to coming from the Manhattan. So you pulling me out of that junction as fast as you were able meant that the pain stopped sooner. I’m grateful. And hell you keep saving my ass like you do and I’m going to owe you, or maybe I already do,” she said a mischievous grin slipped onto her face. “So you name it. One day, any day from now. You need a favour? You call me. I’ve been places, done things. I can make things happen,” she said her eyes still fixed on the screen.

Walker bit back a curse as he was looking through the records, seeing where the power flow had been routing from at the moment of the spike, when Faye said that. No one, not even his worst enemy, deserved that sort of punishment. He had been zapped and burned enough times accidently to know the pain that it could cause, but to experience it on end… He knew Faye was tough, but this was a whole new level.

“I will definitely take you up on that. Though to be honest, if I’m ever in a place where I am needing to call in that favor, the call might come through interesting channels,” he said with a chuckle.

“But that’s what colleagues, and dare I say friends, do. We cover each others backs.

“Speaking of favors. Did I ever tell you about the favor the Bolian ambassador to Arcadia owed us, and how we called that one in?” Walker couldn’t help but chuckle as he remembered the story.
