“Nice thing about Starlfeet, huh? If there are formal events, nine times out of ten, we’re all in our dress uniforms. Keeps it even,” Faye said with a grin.

“That’s true,” Kiama grinned. “Though I’m sometimes sad that we are required to wear dress uniforms at most of those events. For as much as I disliked being forced to attend social events by my mother, I do love to get all dressed up and let’s face it, wearing a ball gown to say a dinner with friends would be a bit much.”

“Getting dressed up is a pretty new thing for me. We never had really formal events ever. Maybe a wedding here or there, but we were all colony folk who work hard most of the days. Most of us didn’t even own a gown,” she said with a grin.

“Nothing wrong with that,” Kiama replied and leaned with her back against her dress. “I sometimes wonder what it would have been like to grow up in a different home. For the longest time I had this idealised notion that it would have been simpler, easier. More loving. Though I know that that isn’t true for everyone. Real life is much more complicated than that.”

Faye considered Kiama and smiled softly. “Well, if you let me I’ll happily share my memories of my home. Tracken was a lot of things, but the most important was it was a community. We all meant something to each other, even if people like me knew it wasn’t the place we wanted to live our whole lives. Something special was lost when the Dominion destroyed that place,” she said sadly, but Faye herself didn’t feel overwhelmed as she spoke. She could acknowledge the pain of losing that hom in such a terrible way without to threatening to overtake her. Exposure therapy, indeed!

“I would love to hear your memories of your home,” Kiama replied sincerely and with gentle emphasis. “You can share everything with me you feel like sharing and I understand if there are things you don’t want to share.” Getting the feeling that it might be good for Faye to have Tess around for that conversation, she asked, “Shall we go back to your quarters?”

“Sure,” Faye said as they gathered their things.

After a brief stop at the ship’s replicators to gather the garments, they returned to Faye’s quarters. Tess watched them enter from the top of the dining table and Faye just gave the empathic cat a stern look and snapped her fingers. “No Tess, down,” she instructed firmly as she approached the table. Tess blinked and then hopped off, scampering over to them. Faye carefully draped the garments over the back of the chair and picked the cat up, shaking her head.

Tess began to purr and Faye just smirked at Kiama. “She’s going to keep me on my toes, I think.”
