Faye beamed at him. “Home is the place where you can be yourself, as you are, and feel safe while doing so,” she said, squeezing his hand.

“Speaking of…” Faye said with gleam in her eyes. “How’s the boyfriend. He coming to our shindig?” She tossed a wicked grin as Daggum and point to her mother. “Her and the Fed Security man,” she said with a wink.

Daggum grinned and said “Wait… he the guy that met you after you accosted me at the elevators?” and he grinned at Shara. “Bribed the desk staff to look out for you and they told me.” and he winked.

A knowing smile played across her lips and Shara lifted her fork. “Well, we weren’t exactly being discreet, now were we?” That had been the point. “And accost is such a strong word, don’t you think? I didn’t even a lay one of my very delicate fingers on you.”

“Ohhh, boyfriend was playing stalker too, Cool,” Faye said with a laugh.

Shara rolled her eyes. “I told you before, I’m a little old to have a boyfriend, and yes, he’s coming. I’ve asked him to bring some ‘shine, given he seemed to have a supply of it I’ve not bothered to question.”

“Uh huh. Sure. Because love has an age limit.” Daggum said and laughed slightly.

Shara still smiled, but something shifted slightly underneath it and she simply went back to eating her pasta. Of course, Faye had been observing her mother and she suspected what was weirding her mother out. But she also didn’t want to push buttons- it was’t necessary here. “Does Pickelsimer have a still somewhere we should know about?”

Shara laughed. “I don’t know, but I wouldn’t be surprised.” She leaned towards Daggum. “I can tell the story now or later, but there was a clichéd man on Tracken who lived on his own and stayed away from the rest of us and had a still. Us adults told our youth exactly why to avoid it.” She shifted her gaze to Faye. “Some people however need evidence and proof,” she said, chuckling at her own pun.

“Oh oh oh…” Daggum said around a mouthful of burger, “… that sounds like a story. Spill it. Let’s hear it.”

Faye covered her face with one hand and shook her head for a moment before bracing her elbow on the table and resting her chin in her hands, almost pouting.

“Well.. Old Man Crombie had a still that produced some very fine brew akin to absinthe. He was very methodical about checking it for impurities, and every now and again we’d find a few bottles left at the community hall, which we would repay with crates of food we had grown or hunted on his doorstep. Now, we adults understood that at roughly seventy-five percent alcohol, this drink was the kind you diluted with something else. And this was something we made very clear to the adolescents who might want to have a moment of rebellion. So one night, Faye and I had a massive argument and she storms off. Now, Ed and I weren’t worried because Faye had just turned thirteen and had all the skills to take care of herself. And so she went off with the others and they disappeared into the woods.”

Shara started chuckling. “About an hour later, her best friend Cameron, who was a year older than her, came rushing to our door, knocking rapidly. I answer and he has this terribly worried expression and he’s all like ‘Shara, come quick, it’s Faye!’ So we rush out and he takes me out through the woods in the direction of Crombie’s and I just looked at him and asked if they had visited the still. He had a sheepish expression on his face, so I had an inkling what might have happened. But Daggum nothing prepared me for seeing my thirteen year old daughter drunk as a skunk holding a notebook in which she had documented in incredible detail what effects the moonshine was having on her after each sip. She hadn’t had that much, but with her body and her first time drinking any alcohol, the hangover lasted two days and our doc had to administer fluids and came just shy of having to pump her stomach,” Shara said laughing.

“Not my finest moment,” Faye said dryly. “But I did use that story in my scientific methodology class. Amused my instructor to no end, especially since I could recall all the data right up until about the seventh generous sip. And probably should have been my first clue that I shouldn’t drink alcohol.”

Shara’s expression shifted. “Well, I think given family history, it’s something to be mindful of anyway. But nonetheless, now that you are older it makes for a very funny anecodte.”

“I would pay to be able to read that.” Daggum said and chuckled. He looked at Shara for a second and then said “So what do I call you now? I mean… ‘Commander’ seems a bit formal for a setting like this. What would you prefer? I mean… anything other than what your boyfriend calls you.” and he grinned and took a bite of burger.

The elder Calloway chuckled. “Shara is fine. Never was much for rank or titles. It did seem to work to my advantage that they tend not to promote people like me past commander anyway,” she said with a grin. “Too conspicuous. That and I never cared for the paperwork.” Shara tilted her head to the side slightly as she pondered over a thought that came to her. It was very similar ot the sort of gesture Faye often made. “Though I suppose I’ll have to get used to the paperwork now.”

“What do you mean?” Faye asked, after swallowing a bite of her lunch.

“Eh, don’t know where yet, but I’ve had confirmation that after my request for a standard duty assignment, they’re looking to place me as a Chief Intelligence Officer. Something about utilizing my experience in a reasonable way,” Shara said with a shrug.

“So… Shara… is that going to suit you? Most CIO ‘s I’ve dealt with are pretty stationary. Most ships don’t have one… although I think they should. Or did you ask for a particular duty station?”
