“I would pay to be able to read that.” Daggum said and chuckled. He looked at Shara for a second and then said “So what do I call you now? I mean… ‘Commander’ seems a bit formal for a setting like this. What would you prefer? I mean… anything other than what your boyfriend calls you.” and he grinned and took a bite of burger.

The elder Calloway chuckled. “Shara is fine. Never was much for rank or titles. It did seem to work to my advantage that they tend not to promote people like me past commander anyway,” she said with a grin. “Too conspicuous. That and I never cared for the paperwork.” Shara tilted her head to the side slightly as she pondered over a thought that came to her. It was very similar ot the sort of gesture Faye often made. “Though I suppose I’ll have to get used to the paperwork now.”

“What do you mean?” Faye asked, after swallowing a bite of her lunch.

“Eh, don’t know where yet, but I’ve had confirmation that after my request for a standard duty assignment, they’re looking to place me as a Chief Intelligence Officer. Something about utilizing my experience in a reasonable way,” Shara said with a shrug.

“So… Shara… is that going to suit you? Most CIO ‘s I’ve dealt with are pretty stationary. Most ships don’t have one… although I think they should. Or did you ask for a particular duty station?”

Shara drew in a long and slow breath. “Well, I don’t know but I’m giving it a try,” she said with a shrug. “I didn’t ask for anything specific except for a position on a ship. I’ve not done that in a long time but it’ll be a change, and it beats sitting at a desk back on Earth. It was that or retire entirely.”

“Why?” Faye asked seriously, giving her mother a quizzical look.

“Because I can’t do field work even if there weren’t other considerations,” Shara said, smiling at Faye.

“Ahh, the familial excuse,” Faye said with her own grin.

“I wanted you to know where I am.”

“You could teach too. You were always really great at it,” Faye remarked.

Shara gave a slow nod. “It’s always a consideration. But I’m not ready to stay on a planet long term. I did it a lot for assignments but… it was different. I don’t know, so much has changed recently and I’m still trying to figure it out.”

“I know the feeling,” Faye said, gazing at Daggum with deep affection. “Speaking of which, Alex joked that when I retired I could always become his gardener,” she said with a laugh. “Maybe our shipping company should be horticultural!” she said, entirely teasing.

Daggum watched the back and forth between the women and smiled. It was good they were able to connect like that… but a part of him hoped that time and distance apart didn’t do anything to complicate their relationship. They’d had enough hurdles, they had earned their peace.

At the suggestion, Daggum nodded. “Of course! And we’ll give Cochrane the ‘Former Commanding Officer and Mentor’ discount for encouraging the idea.” He smiled as he spoke and looked at Faye… and then simply leaned over and kissed her. “I love you. Just thought you should know.” and he went back to his food.
