Faye didn’t know what Lego was but she understood the concept as Kaia described it. As she finished up the few starts that needed planting, Faye dusted the dirt off her hands and went to grab a watering can. “I’m glad you were able to find a way to reimagine your idea,” she said with a smile and tapped her brain. “I tend to do things backwards and sideways, so if you ever need more unlikely ideas, I’m your gal.”

“And don’t forget about the polymer for a coating. You can probably create a shelf stable pellet that can be measured out and melted down in something like a kitchen pot and then poured into a mold. Let it cool and bam, a flexible coating you can affix to the limb.”

Kaia snapped onto the idea. “That’s a good idea. I guess that’s my next small project. Finding that polymer, figuring out how to produce it. Maybe I can find a way to even manufacture it without replicators, depending on the constituent parts of the polymer. It’ll have to have flexibility as well as be thick enough not to gum up the moving parts of the prosthetics…”

Faye chuckled lightly, more to herself than anything. “I have no doubt you’ll figure out something suitable,” she said, brushing the dirt off her hands a bit before watering in the new transplants. “Have you been back recently? Home, I mean?”

Kaia paused at the question, then shook her head. “No. Last time I was home was… Well. It was before I came aboard the Manhattan. And I’ve been on the Manhattan for a couple years now. Home is remote even if you’re not in another quadrant of the Galaxy,” she gave Faye a small shrug, crouching and fiddling with a tiny pebble in her fingers. “Takes too long to get there. I’ve got lots of simulations though,” she gave Faye a small smile.

Kaia, Eng

“You should show me sometime,” Faye said. “I’m not a huge fan of the holodeck most of the time, but it has its uses and I’d love to see where you came from sometime. For me, home is where I am and right now that is on the Manhattan, but I’m still curious about other places.”

“I’d love to,” Kaia replied with a wide smile, her expression lighting up quite a bit at the idea. She loved going for walks on the bridges of Ba’slu, it would be nice to bring someone along. “As long as you’re okay with heights,” she let out a small tease. “I didn’t grow up in the tree-top city, but it’s one of the coolest places near my childhood home. Plus I didn’t have to custom write a program, so it runs better than the holo-program of my childhood home.”

Kaia, Eng

“I have one program I’ve come back to over the years. It’s of a beach on the other side of the Golden Gate bridge in San Fran. Muir Beach. I discovered it when I was at the Academy. Makes me feel at ease. And heights I can do,” Faye said with a grin. “Don’t have fears like that, so all good there.”

Kaia’s grin widened, then she calmed down. “I’d love to show you my program if you’ll show me yours,” she decided, leaning back on her hocks.

“It’s a deal,” Faye said. “Just let me know when you’re free next and we’ll get together.” Faye brushed the dirt off her hands. “And there’s still a few beds free if you want to claim one for yourself and grow stuff. There’s a couple people looking to share a bed as well. Options,” she said, a genuine smile on her face.

Kaia nodded and thought about it for a while. “You know, I’ve always wanted some freshly grown Pad’thesh. The stuff the replicator makes always has a far too uniform consistency. I’ll see if I can get some seeds on the next shipment from the Alpha Quadrant,” she said. “Maybe some Ja’nen beans too… wait, those grow on trees. Maybe not.”

Kaia, offering no explanation as to the nature of Pad’thesh
