“Sure,” Faye said as they gathered their things.

After a brief stop at the ship’s replicators to gather the garments, they returned to Faye’s quarters. Tess watched them enter from the top of the dining table and Faye just gave the empathic cat a stern look and snapped her fingers. “No Tess, down,” she instructed firmly as she approached the table. Tess blinked and then hopped off, scampering over to them. Faye carefully draped the garments over the back of the chair and picked the cat up, shaking her head.

Tess began to purr and Faye just smirked at Kiama. “She’s going to keep me on my toes, I think.”

“She will indeed,” Kiama chuckled and reached over to gently scratch Tess between the ears. “Though in the best way possible, I’d say.” Shifting her gaze from Faye to Tess, she added, “Ain’t I right little Missy? And you’ll also keep an eye on my dear friend, won’t you?”

Tess let out a chirp that Faye was already learning was one of agreement. Who said you couldn’t speak cat?

Walking over to the couch, Kiama sat down and then looked at Faye. “What was your life on Tracken like?” she asked gently and with sincere curiosity and interest. She didn’t want to pry, but let Faye decide what and how much she wanted to share with her.

Faye scooped up Tess and moved over to the couch, sitting with Kiama. “Well, before the whole DMZ and Maquis stuff it was… lovely. We kids got to run about and play in the woods or go swimming. We supervised each other as much as the adults did and so I guess we learned self-reliance that way. But in addition to school, which anyone who was good at anything helped teach, we had chores and work within the community to do. That’s where I learned to garden because I tended to the communal garden beds that produced the majority of our produce. Others had different tasks. Older teens and adults were responsible for hunting or trapping, and younger teens were sent out with a knowledgable adult to forage. And on our days off the community gathered for music and dancing and just general socializing.” Faye smiled, deeply nostalgic. “It was a lovely way to grow up. I mean I got taught advanced calculus and quantum mechanics one day and the next I was out harvesting food for a cookout that would feed everyone. I think that’s the thing I was always looking for,-that sense that others were looking out for you as much as you were for them. I haven’t felt that till I came to the Manhattan, Kiama. And now that I have it again, I don’t want to ever lose that, no matter where I am.”

Kiama listened closely, a soft and tender smile playing across her dark features. “That does sound like a wonderful place to have grown up at,” she said. Without thinking she slipped one are around Faye and continued, “I think I see the similarities between your home and the Manhattan. This ship and her crew really are a special place and I understand why you don’t want to loose that feeling ever again.” Shaking her head and chuckling softly, she added, “Not that I have actually any experiences within Starfleet to compare it with. This is still my very first assignment since I graduated less than two years ago.”
