As everyone made their way off stage, Cochrane said “We have one final award. As we stand in this beautiful space, most of us are aware that it exists only through the dutiful efforts of our own Lieutenant Calloway. And as some of you are aware, Lieutenant Calloway’s service to the ship and to Star Fleet encompasses far more than flowers and vegetables. She has proven herself time and again, and that dedication cannot go unrecognized any longer. Lieutenant Calloway, front and center please.” and he took the remaining small box from the tray.

Shara had quietly made her way over to the bar where Faye and Walker were still leaning, hiding in plain sight. She waved at Walker and stood next to Faye, smiling because she was just so happy to be here. Though as soon as it was reasonable, she entirely planned to sneak out and seek out the sometimes elusive Federation Security agent on board and see what he thought of her all dolled up.

But her attention was drawn when Cochrane began talking about Faye. She turned to her daughter who seemed lost in thought and was momentarily worried. She elbowed Faye. “Hey, he’s calling you. You’re up, Kid.”

Faye was just mulling over things in her mind when her reverie was broken and caught her mother’s words. “What? Oh!” Shit, she thought, thinking that was what she got for zoning out near the end of ceremonies like this. Setting her juice glass down, Faye made her way through the crowd in her black jumpsuit, the sequinned and beaded decorations catching the lights. Stepping up to the stage, she gave Alex a questioning look as she approached him.

Alex looked at her and smiled, then looked out at the crowd. “Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Lieutenant Calloway for all she has done for this ship… this crew… and the Federation. Her work will save countless lives, and it is because of that work and her tireless dedication to us all that I am please to announce that Lieutenant Calloway has been selected to attend Command Officer Training. And, as I have been directed to do by Admiral D’Tash of Star Fleet Command, it is my extreme pleasure to promote Lieutenant Faye Calloway to the rank of Lieutenant Commander… effective immediately.” He turned and handed Faye the open box with Lieutenant Commander rank pips inside and he held out his hand to her. “Congratulations, Lieutenant Commander Calloway.”

Much like before, Faye wasn’t sure what to expect as she stood before him but unlike before she wasn’t so easily fazed by his pronouncement. But then again she was not the same woman who had stood on the stage in this very garden a month and a half ago. So much had changed since that ceremony. She had fallen hard and pulled herself back up… with a lot of help and care and love. And she had helped begin to process of taking down a group that sought to destroy the things that were precious to her. So instead of some offhand comment, Faye shook his hand with a bright smile on his face. “Thank you, Captain. I’m honoured.”

Letting his hand go, Faye then did something that was entirely uncharacteristic: she gave him a salute. Not just a cheeky one with a couple fingers, but a proper one. Still, it wouldn’t be Faye is it somehow was incongruous with her formal evening clothes and dark makeup.

Lt. Commander Calloway(!), Counter-Intelligence Officer

Cochrane drew himself up tall and straight, and returned the salute with military precision. As he dropped his hand, he smiled at her and said “You’ll need to work on that if you get sent to the War College, Lieutenant Commander.” The crowd erupted into cheers and applause, and Alex smiled at his friend.

“luq HoD!” Faye replied in a decent Klingon accent given she rarely got to use the language these days. In her freighter days it was abundantly handy, but not so much here unless they had a Klingon crew member she interacted with.

With a wink at Alex, Faye stepped off the stage and moved back to her spot at the bar, grinning.

Shara just pulled her in for a hug, whispering something in her ear that made Faye laugh aloud.

Pretha had been about to move forward and give Faye a congratulations as well. But when Shara moved in to embrace her, Pretha stepped back and smiled. There would be enough time later to congratulate the woman. The Security Officer was proud of how far Faye had come. And she was also glad she had been right about the woman that night they had met when Faye had done her ‘bad girl’ act. There was always something on this ship to amaze her. But this, so far, stuck out foremost in her mind.

Leaning back against the wall, she waited for everyone to settle. Once the Captain retreated from the stage, she would make the same retreat from the room.
