Looking up just as he was about to begin writing again Luke recognised the voice, “Its hard not to.” It was one of the bigger tree’s as far away from people as possible, it was quiet and yet controlled the scene around it. “You look really well.” It was a genuine compliment, “I can move if you’d like?” He asked leaning to get his bag and begin packing. When he left Luke didn’t say goodbye, he felt it wouldn’t have any benefit and he was in a and place. He needed to remove himself from the situation, for everyone’s benefit but being back, he knew that too was a mistake.

“Nah, don’t go on my account. You’re working, and this place is great for that and I don’t want to bother you. I can go. Just wanted to…” What, say hi? Make things right? Could they? She didn’t even know. “I guess I just wanted to get our first running into each other out of the way. I’ve heard you were back and I just didn’t want it to be public and all awkward and stuff.” They would be working together to a degree, or in and around each other and it would do no good to avoid each other.

Scotting over, “Well how about you take a seat” He was glad their first encounter was one out of the workplace and certainly in an environment they both clearly found relaxing. Luke was silent for a moment wondering what to ask, or if to just get back to work but he didn’t want to be rude especially when she had seemed him out, for what purpose he wasn’t sure maybe she just wanted to say her peace or maybe she wanted to assassinate him in a quite remote area. “How have you been?” He asked his hands folded over the PaDD which rested on his lap.

Beaming smile slipping onto her face, Faye sat next to him on the bench. “I’m pretty fantastic. Truly. I mean, I got a promotion, my Intelligence work is no longer some big secret- which by the way, we did enough to potentially do damage to our secret society foes, and I…” Faye sighed and turned to face him. “Look, I don’t want to beat around the bush here. I want to apologize for how things went down between us. I was using you and I didn’t realize it. I was using you to numb a whole helluva lot of pain. And that wasn’t fair. Regardless of anything on your end, I was unwell Luke. Like really ill, in the way that I can be under extreme amounts of stress. It’s like I hit a threshold and my brain goes haywire. I had some really terrible emotional lows and soaring highs and you unfortunately got caught up in the middle of it all. So… I’m genuinely sorry for that.”

Of all the things he imagined their conversation to go perhaps an apology wasn’t one of them. “Faye” He said turning his head and his body slightly so he was leaning towards her instead of over the garden. “Firstly thank you, that means a lot and I am sorry too I wasn’t exactly at my best either I mean you weren’t the only one doing things a bit… backwards. I was trying to fix you when it wasn’t my place, you weren’t really broken you just needed the right people surrounding you and time and I wasn’t the right person for you at the time and I couldn’t see that, I am happy that you’re in a better place I hope my return doesn’t hinder that progress.” Luke didn’t want to be the thing that Alex had once said he was, bad news. “And you may have been using me but it’s not like I didn’t know, I still… liked our time together I am not entirely stupid” He chuckled.

She was quiet for a moment , considering her words carefully. “I’m still learning how to be a good friend, and maybe we can be friends again, or maybe not. But there’s something you need to know and I wanted you to hear it from me and not from gossip. And if after I tell you, if you want to know more, I’ll explain, but if it’s too much, I understand. Because I don’t want to hurt you, Luke. I really don’t. But…” She held up her left hand, top facing outwards, showing off a ring. ‘A silvery, almost mercurial looking metal was fashioned into vines with multiple small leaves and flowers along each of the three vines that were woven and twisted around each other. In the center of each flower was a small deep red, almost black, gem. And in the center of the ring was set a bright, teal-but-with-a-deeper-blue hue gemstone cut in the rectangular fashion of emeralds from Earth. The stone almost shimmered in the light, giving it a look that made it seem like the inside was almost made of liquid.’ “I’m engaged.”

~Faye

Luke couldn’t lie if he said he was surprised, not because of what they had but because it was Faye. He smiled “Wow it’s beautiful, you really have gone to a better place. Im so happy for you!” Again his words were genuine, what they had before wasn’t real, not really. He had no lingering feelings. Luke had worried about seeing her again, that it might ignite some deep desire and perhaps in other circumstances and if he hadn’t also changed it would have but all he felt now was happiness for her. “They’re a lucky person.”
