“I have one program I’ve come back to over the years. It’s of a beach on the other side of the Golden Gate bridge in San Fran. Muir Beach. I discovered it when I was at the Academy. Makes me feel at ease. And heights I can do,” Faye said with a grin. “Don’t have fears like that, so all good there.”

Kaia’s grin widened, then she calmed down. “I’d love to show you my program if you’ll show me yours,” she decided, leaning back on her hocks.

Kaia, Eng.

“It’s a deal,” Faye said. “Just let me know when you’re free next and we’ll get together.” Faye brushed the dirt off her hands. “And there’s still a few beds free if you want to claim one for yourself and grow stuff. There’s a couple people looking to share a bed as well. Options,” she said, a genuine smile on her face.

Kaia nodded and thought about it for a while. “You know, I’ve always wanted some freshly grown Pad’thesh. The stuff the replicator makes always has a far too uniform consistency. I’ll see if I can get some seeds on the next shipment from the Alpha Quadrant,” she said. “Maybe some Ja’nen beans too… wait, those grow on trees. Maybe not.”

Kaia, offering no explanation as to the nature of Pad’thesh

Faye pondered, her gaze shifting to the side and she then looked up and over the beds. “Depending on the beans, we have lots of trees here. We can probably find one suitable to grow something up. I don’t know what Pad’thesh is but unless there are unusual growing requirements, we should be able to accommodate it as well. We have the greenhouse where we can start seeds as well.”

“I should clarify - the Ja’nen is a tree. I think the cocoa bean on Earth is a comparable plant. Big tree, needs lots of heat and humidity,” Kaia explained with a small giggle. For some reason she always forgot aliens didn’t have the context she did. Luckily she’d done a lot of traveling around Earth during the summers while she was at the Academy, and tropical South America was her favorite location. So many beautiful trees and animals in those rainforests. “And Pad’thesh is a hardy melon that can grow just about anywhere. It fixes nitrogen in the soil too, so it’s great for crop rotation. It’s so juicy and savory, I’d be glad to share some with you. Might have to cook it a little to make it palatable to your human tastebuds,” she considered it.

Kaia, Eng

At this little dilemma, Faye went into problem solving mode as she glancing over the gardens. “We have the glasshouse over in the corner if you haven’t been in there yet. It’s got a lot of tropical plants and trees. But all our tree species are either super slow growing and won’t outgrow the double deck height of the garden, or are dwarf versions. If there isn’t a dwarf version of this tree, what about attempting to create one? Might take a little bit, but we could graft onto a similar species that keeps a smaller stature.”

“It’s fine,” Kaia laughed, shaking her head slightly. “I’ll just focus on the Melons, and leave Ja’nen to the replicator. It was mostly a joke anyways,” she tried to reason. “I’ll see if I can think of some simpler vegetables or fruits from home. Maybe some of the more exciting ones the Arwan cultivated. I’ve not had a lot of those, they didn’t grow well in the jungle.”

Kaia, Eng.

“Well I’m happy to learn!” Faye said brightly. “I kind of wished I had done more botany at the Academy, but I was busy getting other degrees,” she said with a laugh. “I’ll have to do some research and learn more about your world’s biomes and ecology. If you have any particular resources you think are excellent, by all means send them my way.”

~Faye Calloway

“I’ll do that,” Kaia said with a small nod. “There are probably plenty of farmer’s Almanacs or other books with information on all sorts of plants from Taruwen,” she reflected. “I’ll be honest, I didn’t pay that much attention in biology, and I never took any botany classes. My species doesn’t really eat much in the way of plants, so it didn’t really matter to me. Pad’thesh is one of the few plants we can metabolize, since it’s so heavy in protein. We get almost all our nutrients, even energy, from proteins and fats.”

Kaia, Eng

Clearly intrigued, Faye’s gaze was deep as Kaia talked and she nodded. “Makes sense.”

“Hey, so I gotta get going. I’m going to be on duty soon and need to shower and stuff. Why don’t we set-up a time to meet on the holodeck and you can give me a tour of your home?”
