Alex smiled at her and said “I appreciate the concern Faye.” and he winked. “This dream was all mine. It really was. She kept pushing us to become athletes or artists… something she could brag about. But after her absolutely epic fall from grace? Rache and I both decided what we wanted to do was make sure the whole Fleet knew that we are definitively not her children. That she did not define us. I mean… you said you knew what happened when we got to the Academy, right? That was her final way of trying to decide what we did… to take credit for us pursuing our dreams. And she failed. And that makes me more happy than you can possibly know.” and he chuckled.

Alex

She gave him a lopsided smirk. Faye still thought even his joy in his trumping his mother was still about her more than he wanted to admit, but it was okay. Everyone had their places they couldn’t entirely let go. Goodness knew she did! She might be coming out the other side of seriously damaging trauma, but it was never going to leave entirely. It just didn’t get to decide her happiness. “Well, this shipping company of Dag’s and mine might just be horticultural if I get my way. He said you can have a discount” she said with a grin. “You know, when I’m doing your landscape design and all.”

“I’ll make sure the estate grounds are both spacious and fertile, Faye.” and he laughed. He looked at her and then the laughter subsided after a moment. He cocked his head to the side and said “It’s good to see you excited about you and your future, Faye. Although…” and his voice trailed off and he looked intently at her.

“Hmm?” Faye said meeting his gaze.

“When do you plan of transferring off the Manhattan, then? And don’t try and kid me… I know you’ve already thought about it.”

Alex

Her expression fell and her gaze shifted down, focusing on Tess who was now sound asleep in her lap. As she drew her hand over her soft thickening fur, Faye sighed. “I don’t know. Dag’s not been gone that long and I’m already feel crazy here without him. And while we haven’t set a date for the wedding yet, I don’t imagine we’ll put it off too long, and then what? We’ll be married but be in different quadrants? Sure, we can talk to each other, but what kind of marriage is that? And I know other couple do the long distance thing because of Starfleet but… I’m not sure I want to. I don’t think it’s for me, Alex. I’ve waited so long to have what Dag and I have and…”

“You have indeed.” he said quietly.

Faye forced herself to look at her friend, her mentor. “There’s no future here for me. Don’t get me wrong, I love it here. The Manhattan is my home and it’s where I’ve grown incredibly as a person, but I want to more than to be an Intelligence assistant.” She shrugged. “I can only go so far, here, unless you know of some extraordinary set of circumstances that will change that and give my husband a place to be in his career too. But the same time the thought of leaving makes me sick to my stomach.”

Alex smiled and reached over and took her hand. “Faye… there has always been a plan in my head. Several… and not one of them involved you staying here forever.” and he squeezed her hand and then let go.

“Always a couple steps ahead of me,” she said, shaking her head.

“Command mentorship. Promotion. High profile award. No… you have never been destined to stay here. And if you tried, I’d sedate you and send you to Hammor in a cargo crate.” and he laughed. “You deserve happiness, Faye. Your own life. And that is what you are getting here… the tools to build your own life away from here. I’m not asking you to stay, Faye… I’m asking you when do you want to go?”

Alex

It was hard! She didn’t even want to talk about it! But it was Alex and they would have had to have this conversation sooner or later. “After the wedding. I want to get married here, on the Manhattan. In the garden. “I want the last memory I have of this ship and the Delta Quadrant to be one of joy and love. And then maybe I can say…” Nope, she couldn’t do it. Tears filled her eyes and she looked away. Tess’s head perked up at her person’s sudden emotional shift but for the moment it seemed okay so Tess just gazed at Faye with her clear blue eyes.
