She broke into laughter. “And a Klingon commander told you that? Awesome!” Faye said with more laughs. Tess, startled, had gotten up and was watching them both for a moment before settling into the space on the sofa between them.

After a moment Faye gazed at him intently. “Alex, in case I forget to say… thank you. For everything. For believing in me when I wasn’t sure I could even believe in myself. I don’t know what will happen between you and Zef, but I want to see you happy too. Maybe that’s with her. Maybe it’s not.” She shrugged. “But I think we can both hope that we live life like my mom and Pikelsimer are. I mean, that’s knowing who you are. That’s jumping in with both feet!”

Alex smiled and said “You need never thank me, Faye. Working with you, learning with you, fighting with and beside you…” and he laughed, “… you have helped me become a better Captain and better person. That is something I can never thank you enough for…” He leaned forward and took both her hands in his and looked at her directly.

“I love you, Faye. You are my best friend and part of my family. And your friendship and support have helped me more than you will ever know. I don’t know what the future holds for either one of us… but regardless of where you are, what you are doing, or what is happening… always remember that you are never alone. You always… always always… have me. And I will always have your back, whether you are right or wrong. Nothing will ever change that.”

Alex

“Ditto,” she said softly, her eyes welling with tears again as she squeezed his hands back before letting them go. Gods! When had she become so mushy and tearful?! And though she wouldn’t think of it so right now, later, when a farewell came about, she’d look back to this moment as them saying it now. Getting it out of the way so it wasn’t so hard when the actual time came. Tess nudged her hand and Faye looked down. “Sorry, sweetheart. This must be really confusing for you, huh? Then again, I would imagine you’re getting used to the mood changes,” she said with a soft chuckle.

“Dag and I want kids, Alex. I don’t know how or if that will even work for us, but it’s strange, I never thought of myself as a mother. And I’m a little more than terrified my mixed-up neurotic scientist brain will be even worse as a mom, but I don’t know, with Dag I can imagine that kind of life. Us on a starship, maybe him working elsewhere here and there. It’s not a bad life at all.”

~Faye

“Any life you make for yourself… on your own terms and no one else’s… will be a great life. I won’t let you accept anything less, Commander.” and he winked.

Alex

Faye couldn’t help grin at him, though her expression shifted slightly the longer she gazed at him. “It’s a good thing I draw a line at punching pregnant women,” she said lifting her brows slightly. “I’m sorry you’ve been hurt so badly, but promise me something?”

~Faye

Alex shook his head. “Don’t be mad at her, Faye. This is cultural difference, not maliciousness. And we’ll work through it… or we won’t. That’s the way of the universe, right? And I will try to promise you whatever you need, but not until I know what it is.”

Alex

“Take it from someone who has used alcohol to numb things more often than she’d like to admit, but it’s not a good habit, Alex. Promise me that if you’re having that kind of day you’ll drink with me, not alone. Just bring that pretty little stone of yours by and we’ll commiserate together. I’m not gone yet, got it?” she said sternly. He might be higher ranked than her, but Faye had (she felt) just that little bit more life experience. And for once it was coming in handy with perspective.

~Faye

Alex looked at her and said “I drink, but I am not a drunk. And yes, I can will promise you that should I ever feel the need to anesthetize my feelings with a good whiskey; I and the rock will let you know. I promise.” and he smiled.
