Alex shook his head. “Don’t be mad at her, Faye. This is cultural difference, not maliciousness. And we’ll work through it… or we won’t. That’s the way of the universe, right? And I will try to promise you whatever you need, but not until I know what it is.”

Alex

“Take it from someone who has used alcohol to numb things more often than she’d like to admit, but it’s not a good habit, Alex. Promise me that if you’re having that kind of day you’ll drink with me, not alone. Just bring that pretty little stone of yours by and we’ll commiserate together. I’m not gone yet, got it?” she said sternly. He might be higher ranked than her, but Faye had (she felt) just that little bit more life experience. And for once it was coming in handy with perspective.

Alex looked at her and said “I drink, but I am not a drunk. And yes, I can will promise you that should I ever feel the need to anesthetize my feelings with a good whiskey; I and the rock will let you know. I promise.” and he smiled.

Alex

“Good,” she said with a sharp nod. “That’s all I wanted to hear. Besides, I know you’re not a drunk. But the line between a healthy and unhealthy relationship with the stuff can be a little… thin sometimes. I dunno. My mom’s been telling me stuff about her grandfather and I can understand why she cut ties with him altogether and way I’ve never known him. Not sure I want to. Though did I tell you Dag and I are inviting my uncle Gavin? Turns out he was the one who sponsored my Starfleet application. Helluva way to owe a person. I haven’t even met the guy!”

~Faye

“You did not, but I hope he accepts. He should see the results of his sponsorship in person.” Alex leaned back and smiled…

“Well… I’m not holding my breath,” she said more seriously. “He refused to go to her wedding with Dad and they’ve not talked all these years, so who knows. But Mom did say that the war changed people, so maybe that’s true of him too. Who knows. But I’m going to send an invite an… just see what happens.”

“So when is the wedding going to be? Any idea? I don’t take you for a long-engagement kinda girl.” and he winked.

Alex

Faye couldn’t help but laugh. “Definitely not. I know myself. I’d be stupid and get myself all worked up and do something to drive him away because I’m scared about all of this. Not intentionally mind you, but even at my best times the BPD makes my brain go in weird directions. Anyway, Dag and I need to chat because while I was a little overwhelmed at first by the whole thing, the more he’s away the more I realize I don’t want to put it off too long. And while I know we can do long-distance. I’m not sure I want to. We both deserve more than that.”

~Faye

Alex looked at her for a long time in silence and then just nodded once. “Ok… so knowing you as I do, I’m going to do something that is going to make you really happy… but not before you get mad.” and he winked. =/\= Computer. Personnel file for Lieutenant Commander Faye Calloway. Flag for transfer off USS Manhattan in six months from todays stardate. =/\=

The Computer chirped once and Alex looked at Faye. “Your happiness isn’t fixed here anymore… and I’m not going to let the whims of the Fleet keep you from that happiness. You have six months to get ready for your happiness. And I can’t wait to see it.” and he smiled at her. It was filled with joy, but was also bittersweet. He was gong to miss his friend.
