Alex looked at her for a long time in silence and then just nodded once. “Ok… so knowing you as I do, I’m going to do something that is going to make you really happy… but not before you get mad.” and he winked. =/\= Computer. Personnel file for Lieutenant Commander Faye Calloway. Flag for transfer off USS Manhattan in six months from todays stardate. =/\=

Faye’s jaw dropped open and it was clear her mind was working through permutations and hadn’t quite caught up to what was happening here.

The Computer chirped once and Alex looked at Faye. “Your happiness isn’t fixed here anymore… and I’m not going to let the whims of the Fleet keep you from that happiness. You have six months to get ready for your happiness. And I can’t wait to see it.” and he smiled at her. It was filled with joy, but was also bittersweet. He was gong to miss his friend.

She could barely breathe. Faye tried to take a larger breath, but she just.. couldn’t. Fingers tapping anxiously on her thigh, she shook her head in incomprehension. “No… it… but…” Tess bumped her hand and let out a plaintive ‘mew’. Uncertain what was happening but knowing her person was struggling Tess looked at Alex almost questioningly, and perhaps a little accusatorially.

“Six months…” Faye took a slightly larger breath, though it wasn’t quite enough just yet. “I can do that.” She didn’t sound so convinced. She hadn’t even planned how the change would work. The hows and whats mattered but leaving the Manhattan had scarcely been a full idea until Alex mentioned it. Just an idle thought. Nothing more. “I’m leaving,” she said, utterly dismayed. Alex was here. And so many other friends too. People who had seen her through really hard times. People she didn’t have to explain all the crazy stuff to. And she’d have to do that all over again. Somehow.

“In six months. And you’ll be leaving to go on your next chapter.” and he laughed. “Seriously, what did you think would happen? You’d make Commander, be qualed for an XO spot and then… what? You bump off Creed and stay my XO till I retire?” and he laughed again. “No, Faye…you’re getting too big for this ship. And you do better with definitive goals. So… what can I do to help you plan your wedding?” he asked excitedly, but with a hint of amusement.

Okay, so while that particular scenario had not crossed her mind, his point was well and truly made. What good was a command trained officer skulking around a computer lab? “Wedding… I’m getting married.”

“Yeah… the ring is kind of a dead giveaway, Faye.” Alex said with a smile.

Shut up,” she said with a grin. The ring was something tangible but that didn’t make her future with Dag less dream-like.

Inhaling deeply, Faye gazed at Alex intently. She reached out a hand and took his. “Okay, hand holding time, though perhaps a little less literal,” she said with a tiny smirk. “Help me compose the message to my Uncle Gavin? I’ll do a written one and if he wants to come, he can contact me and I’ll give them to him. If not, oh well, nothing lost.”

“You bet. I’d be happy to. And I’ll offer this… if you want, I’ll call him for you. Talk to him directly, Captain to Captain.” and he grinned and winked.

Well that was an option she hadn’t considered and for a moment Faye was truly tempted. But she shook her head. “No. Be there with me but let’s try a written message with no pressure first.”

Exhaling, Faye scooped up Tess and set her to the side and moved over to her tidy desk. Activating the terminal she brought up a new message. “Computer begin composing message and flag for delivery to Captain Gavin Conner of the USS Tecumseh.”

“Begin message.”

“Hi. This is your niece, Faye. I recently found out through my mom that you were my Academy sponsor. Which, given everything that had happened all those years ago, surprised me greatly. I don’t know why you did that… computer pause recoding.” Faye grimaced at Alex and shook her head. “Ugh yuck. I don’t know what to say to the man. A part of me just immediately gets angry when I think about how he tossed us away back then.”

“He didn’t toss you away, Faye. From what your mom has said and what you have told me… I imagine there is a lot more pain on his part than you are realizing. And pain makes us do thngs we wouldn’t always do. Sometimes those things lead us on a path thats hard to come back from. Give him some slack… if he acts in a way that isn’t good after that? At least you put the olive branch out there.” and he motioned for her to start over.

He hadn’t been there and seen the deep hurt her mom rarely ever showed. This went deeper than Gavin’s disdain for the Maquis and the whole thing was endlessly complicated. But… that was between her mom and her brother and Faye was trying hard to imagine a relationship with her uncle. Inhaling slowly, she let out a sharp breath. “Computer, erase recording and begin new message.”

After a chirp, Faye began anew. “Hey Gavin, this is Faye, Shara and Edward’s daughter and you niece. I recently discovered that you were my Academy sponsor and, well… I was rather surprised. I have a lot of questions and…” She reached out and paused the recording for a second to give herself time to think. After a few seconds, she hit record again. “I think it’s maybe time we met. Lots had changed in my life and some really great things are happening. Including the fact that I am getting married. Family has always been super important to me and so my fiancé Daggum and I… well, we’d like you to come. If you’re not interested, that’s fine, you can just ignore this message. But if you want to come, reply and I’ll give you the details once I have them. Your niece, Faye. “Computer end recording.” She quirked an eyebrow at Alex to what he thought about that attempt.
