Alex put an arm around her and said “You didn’t know… she didn’t know… Shara didn’t know. It sucks… it’s hard… but it’s also the past, Faye. And we can’t change the past. But we can make sure the future doesn’t waste time dealing with the past. You say you could have had someone? Well… so could this sister of yours. You already have common ground. But for now? Now be pissed… get mad and cry… let it out so you can process that next line of data…”

“My brain…” Sometimes it was the only thing she could say. Too many tangents. Too many possibilities and at the moment she was having a hard time grasping what that next line even was.

The comms chimed.

Alex

There wasn’t time! It was all coming too fast. Process how? The chime only made the panic worse and made her head foggy. She hated this thing that happened when she was under a lot of stress, hated the way it took over and did whatever it wanted to. It was the thing that no medication could make better. Every day had been a bare-knuckle fight to get herself to a place where she called the shots. But things were still tenuous lately, even if her life was really good right now.

The chime. the damn chime. Couldn’t she just have a minute? Moving over, she glanced at the screen and frowned. No details. Great. With tear stained cheeks, she jabbed the key with her index finger, opening the call and seeing who it was her stomach dropped. Great! Just great.

Micah looked at her and smiled a knowing smile. He took a breath and said “Hey. How are you holding up?”

Pikelsimer

“You’re all doing in my head right now. You get that, right?” she said as she sank back into the chair at the desk. Tess immediately jumped up, her fluffy tail blocking Micah for a moment until Tess settled in on the desk next to the computer. She was studying Faye closely.

Faye braced her elbows on the desk and spread her hands out, looking over at Alex. She shook her head, not trusting her words right now.

Alex just gave her a nod and motioned for her to try and stay calm.

Micah chuckled understandingly. “Yeah… I can certainly see that.” and he watched as the cat settled. “Well, know you aren’t the only one. I was still nursing one helluva hangover and the fact I woke up married when your ma sprung the news on me. So I get where you’re coming from, really.” and he trailed off as he moved closer to the comm viewer.

Faye snorted. Her brain was still trying to process that the man was kin to her now and it was… weird. Yep, still weird. But that fact was still probably the only reason she was allowing the conversation.

“She’s really nice, your sister. And I dug through everything on her, trust me. But she’s… she’s nice. No Faye for sure, …” he said with a grin and a touch of affection, “… but ok in her own right. I think you two’d get along really well, actually. She’s… she’s excited to meet you. Scared as all hell.... probably didn’t help when I said I had a plan on killin’ her if she turned out to be a fake…” and he winked, “… but she’s got the same backbone you and your mom have. And Sha is more off-kilter and floundering than I’ve ever seen her.” He paused and looked at her for a moment.

Faye wasn’t always good at interpreting gazes. And here it felt more accusatory than was maybe intended. But damn it she was sick and tired of people making her the villain in these conversations. As if having her own feelings about stuff, even if they weren’t positive was somehow making things worse. To hell with that!

“She sure could use a familiar face to help ground her, Faye. Help her move past the fear and shame she’s feelin’.”

Micah

Was the disbelief evident on her face. Did he understand what he was asking? No, probably not. But her mother did not flounder so she understand why Micah thought she could help. She shook her head slightly. “I don’t know what you expect me to say or do. I’m barely holding it together here and the reality is that you know her better than I do. She and I… we’ve never had that close of a relationship. Sure, she’s opened up to me more recently than she ever had before, but this isn’t the norm, Micah,” she said, testing out his first name for the first time. “I’m still trying to figure out who she is, and now there is all this other stuff. We’ve only just begun to work through old stuff. We haven’t even touched the big argument yet, and I know it’s because things are still fragile and I wasn’t in a good space for it.”

Faye shook her head. “Did she tell you? I bet she didn’t.” Faye gazed off to the side again, but this time looking away from Alex. “She left. She left Tracken to go help out that other Maquis cell upgrade their computer protocols after we got some info about new Cardassian improvements. I begged her not to go. My gut said that separating us just then was a bad idea. And oh we fought about it. But she made it clear that I had no say in it and left. Fine. But my dad did the same thing even if it was a bit different. And in the end I was left on my own. And so help me if you give me some bullshit about the past being the past I will end this call. The past doesn’t stop having its say until you deal with it. Clearly, or else we wouldn’t be having this call right now.,” she said with irritation as she looked back at Micah, doing her best to disguise the hurt. “I’m sorry that I can’t just jump up and down and make her feel great about it all, but she’s been holding back on me my entire life. So forgive me if I’m cautious as I try to figure out who that woman is and how I…” Faye shook her head. She was too confused right now but the one thing she did know was that she was tired of being pushed to the side for ‘the greater good’.
