He kissed her shoulder as she reached for her undershirt. Sair playfully swatted him away as she slipped it over her head and onto her torso, letting it cling to her well tone body. As she grabbed the charcoal scrub top, he gently grabbed her wrist, rubbing the tips of her fingers along the tendons on the top of her hand.

“Don’t you need to go get ready for your surgery? Dr. Jarsorva has been on you all week about being present. I don’t want to get you into trouble,” she said.

He grinned at her, playfully helping her get dressed, after quite happily getting her undressed earlier. “I’m an intern. You’re an attending. I think that alone could be a problem., even though we’re not in the same department. So, maybe not such a big deal,” he replied with a wink.

“Vir…” she said with a sigh. “This is just /this/,” she said, gesturing to the on-call room they were in. “Because we’re stressed and things suck and for a few moments I don’t want to think about it. If that’s not what this is for you, this can’t happen again,” she explained seriously.

“You’re cute when you’re panicking.”

“I’m not panicking!” Songz said with exasperation.

He leaned in and brushed his lips against hers. “Yes, you are. But don’t worry Sair, I won’t say anything to anyone and I’m not after anything. I like you, but we both have things to focus on. I hear you Dr. Songz. So stop worrying.”

With a sigh and playful push, she moved him towards the door. “Go! Before they page you.”

Stealing a kiss, the young man slipped out of the room, leaving Sair shaking her head.

“Dr. Songz, we need you at bed one. They’re Stage Three,” Dr. Denkalo said, her eyes sad.

Sair followed her resident over to the newly admitted patient and gave the woman a friendly smile. She looked over the chart and the readings before her, before pulling out her scanner. “Hello Yai, I’m Doctor Songz. On a scale of one to ten, ten being the most you’ve ever felt before, can you tell me how much pain you are in?” she said as she put a patch o the woman’s chest to give a visual of her airway.

“Eleven,” she said with a raspy voice, her every facial feature etched in tension and pain.

Nodding knowingly, Sair gave a grim smile and gave her hand a squeeze. “Okay. We’re going to help with that, alright?”

“You’re not going to send me home, are you?” Yai asked with worry.

In the pit of her stomach, Songz felt a hardness form and threaten to crush her. “No, no we’re not,” she said softly.

The woman nodded, though there were tears in her eyes. “Thank you! Do what you have to. I’m ready.”

Sair forced a cheery smile and nodded, turning her attention to her staff. “Give her the standard combo and fifty milligrams of ‘koraliapizine.”

Away from the bed, Denkalo managed to hide her surprise and nodded, though she didn’t understand fully what was going on. “Move her to Grey Ward,” Songz said, signing off on the ‘treatment’ plan with a thumbprint.

“Already?”

“You heard her, she’s ready,” Sair said firmly. “It’s the least we can do.” Moving away, Sair felt numb.

“But she’s only forty-two!” Denkalo cried.

“You don’t think I don’t know that?” Sair said, turning back to face the resident. “We can’t do anything for her. It’s her time.” Sair turned and continued on down the hallway.

“But she’s only forty-two,” Denkalo whispered to herself.

To be continued…
