At promptly 0800, the start of shift as requested, Mal’athar pressed the chime to Darach office. Or perhaps it was a work room or closer to a machine shop. Or maybe a storage hold? It was the one thing that she loved about Operations officers. They were unique and unpredictable. Most Operations chiefs she’d worked with were practical, but how that practicality asserted itself was always different. On the Fastrac the Operations chief and boxed out a room at the top of the stacks in the main cargo hold for an ‘office.’ He’d said it allowed him to see everything that he had access to and over look it all, and he was harder to find up there. She knew the interuption wouldn’t be welcome, but it was necessary. Mal’athar didn’t want the first time she spoke with CWO Darach to be the first time she needed to make a request or give orders.

Mal’athar, XO

“Enter!” Walker called as the doors slid open. For whatever reason the ship designers had not thought to put in a designated space for an operations chief, probably because they thought all they were good for was pushing buttons on the bridge. Forgetting all of the other day to day details of keeping a ship this size running.

When Walker had first arrived on the Manhattan, he had been thankful to rate senior officer quarters, so had done most the paperwork out of there. Setting aside some space in one of the back corners of the cargo holds for any supplies he needed to keep secure. But with the addition of the CRIT team, he had been able to upgrade. When they had secured Cargo Bay 4 for the CRIT team supplies, he had been able to convert part of the upper deck of the cargo hold, on deck 9, into a secure storage locker, and a small workspace for himself.

As Mal’athar entered, he would notice that three of the 4 walls were lined with secure storage lockers. The only way to tell one locker from the next was by the number painted on the door. And in the middle of the room was a display table, where Walker was standing reviewing what looked like inventory lists.

“What can I help you with this morning Commander?”

Shedda looked around at the make shift office. Darach seemed to have made good use of the space. “Good morning, Chief Warrant.” Shedda offered her hand. “I don’t want hold up your morning too much, so to the point, the question is what can I do for you? There’s quite a bit of logs, requests, personnel requests, and it goes on, for me to review. I don’t want anything to get lost or delayed in the sudden switch over.”

Mal’athar, XO

Standing up straight, Walker took in their new XO. He had a long career, and when an officer came in trying to make things easier, well it usually either never happened, or there was a catch. Picking up his coffee cup he took a sip as he considered his words.

“Well Commander, I appreciate the offer. I’m sure I could dig up a few requests that would need your personal touch. But with the CRIT team on board, we already get top billing for our requisition requests. There are some times that there are more, let’s say unique items, that I am asked to acquire. But it’s nothing beyond my abilities,” Walker answered with a grin.

“Perhaps I should be asking you. Is there anything that you require while here on the Manhattan. Commander.”

CWO Darach - COO
