Daggum smiled at her, an smile of understanding of similar pains. “I cried when F’klet was killed. And it bothered me that it bothered me. I dunno… it was like I had been robbed of a possibility… no matter how remote it was. I felt her for a long time after… probably until I was eighteen or nineteen. Maybe later, but I remember catching a scent of her body oils from somewhere or something… even though I was nowhere near anyone. Crap like that. And it really pissed me off for a long time. But that eventually faded… at least I think so. I don’t remember it if it has.”

Faye knew that if she had told anyone else about Kodell’s haunting presence, they’d have been concerned. But it was moments like this with Daggum that solidified why they worked so well together. Sometimes, two people with deep trauma only made it worse for the other, but with them, they understood and could hold that very unusual space others could not. And it only made her love him that much more.

There wasn’t much space, but Faye rose from her seat, her hand still in his, and she simply slipped onto his lap, all but curling up against him. The shuttle was on auto-pilot and so long as they were nearby, it was fine. But she felt this deep need to be held by him and to sho him the same quiet comfort back. No words necessary.

Bump

Daggum pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her. He kept silent for a long time, just holding her to him. Finally he said quietly “I love you, Faye. And I don’t want to leave you. Not for a few months, not for a week, not for a day.” and he squeezed her to him.

Daggum

“I know,” she murmured. it would be hard for him to leave Event Horizon and return to the Athena and she didn’t begrudge him that for a moment, but it was also hard to let him go after getting to this astonishing point where he was in her life for the long haul. “We’ll have to make a deal to send a message everyday, even if it’s just a word or a line. More sharing, more knowing. But also the silly quirky things that you share with someone on a day to day basis. I want to send you messages that say ‘Darlin’, today was good. Or, today shucked shit but was made better when I thought of you.”

~Faye

Daggum chuckled and said “Deal. Done and done, my love. But it may be more than one message.” and he smiled for a moment and then a thought occurred to him. “You know… we should have a code word. Just you and I. Something we can say that will let the other know things are not okay and we need to drop everything and come. What do you think?”

Daggum

Faye beamed. “That’s a great idea! If I’m struggling, especially if I’m symptomatic I might not be able to sit down and explain it all and then wait, but I’ll message you on a Priority flag with BD which will stand for bad day. And then probably run through my coping mechanisms until you can call. What about you?”

~Faye

Daggum thought for a moment and then said “Hast. If I use that, then there is something wrong. And it will have to be really wrong. So BD for you, Hast for me. If that comes across, we are on point to get ahold of each other. And we don’t stop trying till we do. Deal?” and he held out a big green hand towards her while looking at her and smiling.

Slipping her smaller hands into his, Faye shook it. “You got yourself a deal, Dag. And a promise. And I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”

The ship carried on its way back to Event Horizon and soon they were docking back in the shuttlebay. Though it had been a little while since she had flown, her intuition was still finely honed and Faye set the ship down gently. Reaching forward, she patted the top of the console. “That’s it, good job,” she told the shuttle.

Cleaning up the detritus of their picnic, Faye beamed at Dag. “Just need to deal with this and it’s club time! How do you feel about Bolian Electronic Dance Music?” she asked, her grey-green eyes gleaming.

~Faye

Daggum smiled broadly at her as he helped clean up and said “Oh I absolutely hate it!” and then he laughed. “No, not really. It’s just not my thing… but I want to experience your things, too.” and he tossed the remains of the meal into the recycler. “But after that, we have a stop to make. I got you a little something for your going-away present, and it arrived this afternoon.” and he winked at her.
