She grinned at him. “You’re welcome. I’d be a poor friend if it was always about my nonsense… interesting and crazy nonsense that it sometimes can be. But though I’m still new in this ‘being a true friend’ thing, I like to think that I’m greatly improving on a regular basis.”

Moving over to wash her hands off, Faye tried them on a towel and moved back to the workbench. Opening the packs of seeds, she carefully tipped some out onto her hand. they were narrow dark seeds bout one centimetre long with a pale wispy piece attach that looked somewhat fluffy and somewhat straw-like. “Alright, so we take our pinkies and make a tiny divot about three millimetres deep in each cell, pop a seed in each and gently nudge some soil over top and press down lightly so there is guaranteed contact wth the soil. Then we’ll water them in so we don’t have to worry about air bubbles,” she said as she handed him a pack of seeds and began to make the indentations.

Alex watched and then copied, and in a few minutes they were moving along smoothly. Alex was silent in his work, but looked at Faye from time to time and made sure he was following her example. “You know, you are going to have to turn the garden over to someone. Have you thought of that?”

Alex

Eyes focused on the trays in front of her, Faye kept planting seeds. “Been avoiding it, actually. I mean, at the end of the day the Botanical Science team is responsible for it, but do I have a particular person to be caretaker. Nope. Not sure who would want to to be honest. And… ” She looked up and over at Alex. “I’m not sure it should be up to me. I created this place in part for me, yes, but also for this crew, my family. I think I have to trust that my family will take care of it in return without me micromanaging from another Quadrant.”

Cochrane didn’t look up, but he said “That’s a good lesson to get to, actually. Sometimes it’s really hard to sit back and just let people do their thing. Trust me… it’s a trap a lot of CO’s fall into; having to make sure every little thing is right. It’s not always malicious when they do it, but it always drives a wedge between the CO and the crew. Sometimes you just have to let them do what they need to do… and do it their way. So yes… trust them to do what needs to be done. But also make sure that they have someone to look to when things go sideways. Someone you trust to guide… not direct.”

Alex

Faye nodded slowly. “I’m not sure exactly when it was that it became no longer my garden, but the garden and at that point it was no longer up to me. I think the part that might be hard to leave behind most is the mushroom house, but then again, the symbolism was that we were together even when we were apart and soon enough we will never be apart, so maybe I can let those secret messages just be secrets for others to find and ponder over.” She flashed Alex a grin. “Besides, Dag could always build me another one.”

“I bet he is already looking for places to put it.” Alex replied and then laughed.

“What about you? What are you going to do when I’m not here to cause chaos and keep you on your toes? I mean, don’t get me wrong, you’re not getting rid of me. Expect regular messages in your inbox that will make you roll your eyes, but… I guess I worry about you a little. Especially how everything worked out with Zef.”

Alex shrugged. Even the mention of her name cut a little. “I may actually take some leave. Without you here trying to blow up the Jeffries Tubes every ten seconds, I might just be able to.” and he looked at her and grinned and winked. Going back to the seeds, he said “I appreciate the concern. Zef was… hard… it’s true… but that’s okay. Some things just aren’t meant to be. And who knows what the future holds? Maybe I just have a thing for Counselors and I’ll end up putting the moves on the new one.” and he looked at Faye and began laughing.

Alex

Faye snorted. “To each their own,” she said, giving Alex a sideways glance. “And admit it, you’re not just going to miss me, you’re going to miss the excitement,” she said, waggling her brows at him as she dusted the first off her hands. “Or as you put it before, that special brand of chaos.”
