While Sair didn’t have personal knowledge of the syndicate, there were many Kobliads who had had their fair share of run-ins, usually if they were trying to get dueridium from less than reputable sources. “Why join Starfleet specifically? By the sounds of it, you could have gone in many directions, but you chose this one? Why?”

Shedda smirked, “Not so many opportunities where I grew up. I wanted to do something that brought be people together in a positive way, and despite the problems in any military institution Star Fleet does good work. And I love archeology and there was the Daystrom institute I guess, but Star Fleet would let me pursue that interest while helping others in an above board way. What’s found is shared with everyone, not sold to the highest bidder or to which ever private interest group can provide the most favors or prestige.”

Sair nodded. “I know you just got here, but tell me about your impressions of the ship, and of your assignment. Executive Officer is a demanding role, how do you feel about where you’ve ended up?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Shedda grinned, “I love it. I could not have picked a more ideal assignment. The top of the line science vessel in the whole fleet. The ship assigned to the Delta Quadrant, meeting new people, discovering new things, nothing here is routine. Cpt. Cochrane has managed to put together the most impressive crew I have ever seen. The ship itself is a scientist dream. I know that’s not my role here, but I will always be a scientist at heart. The crew, everyone I have met, is welcoming and open minded, and brilliant. There are so many people here for me to learn more from. I am very excited for this position.”

A wide and genuine smile spread over Sair’s face. “I love hearing that. It’s lovely to fee inspired by your surrounding s and I think I can say you’re in good company.” Crossing her legs at the knee, Songz sat back in her chair for a moment. “What sort of challenges have you prepared yourself for in coming here? Anything you’re concerned about or keeping an eye out for?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Shedda leaned back against the chair. Her posture was very formal, but she was actually quite relaxed for herself. “Well I’ve followed the Manhattan class design from the beginning. I am very familiar with the science labs and their technology. As a chief science officer I kept up with all of that, even if my ship wasn’t getting it. Part of being in command is being familiar with every department. Not an expert but a working solid foundation of the departments. Manhattan is a much bigger and newer ship than where I served previously and the engineering is so much more modern. So I studied and retook the engineering qualification for the bridge officer’s test.”

Sair nodded. “Has that made you feel more prepared to take on this role then?” she asked. Shedda gravitated towards talking about external things and there was nothing wrong with that, but at some point she wanted to understand the XO’s view on the internal as well. It would help her understand her outlook when it came to executing her duties here.

Shedda pondered, “Some. Part of being XO is making those hard decisions when given choices by your experts. Their lives, careers, their family’s lives are affected by my choices, by the decisions I make. If I’m not educated or experienced enough I can hurt a lot of people. I know I will make mistakes, but I don’t want it to be because I didn’t do what I could to be prepared.”
