Slipping her smaller hands into his, Faye shook it. “You got yourself a deal, Dag. And a promise. And I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”

The ship carried on its way back to Event Horizon and soon they were docking back in the shuttlebay. Though it had been a little while since she had flown, her intuition was still finely honed and Faye set the ship down gently. Reaching forward, she patted the top of the console. “That’s it, good job,” she told the shuttle.

Cleaning up the detritus of their picnic, Faye beamed at Dag. “Just need to deal with this and it’s club time! How do you feel about Bolian Electronic Dance Music?” she asked, her grey-green eyes gleaming.

Daggum smiled broadly at her as he helped clean up and said “Oh I absolutely hate it!” and then he laughed. “No, not really. It’s just not my thing… but I want to experience your things, too.” and he tossed the remains of the meal into the recycler. “But after that, we have a stop to make. I got you a little something for your going-away present, and it arrived this afternoon.” and he winked at her.

Faye just stared at him in awe. “A present? Another one? I mean, really, Dag, you’re setting the bar rather high you know,” she teased. They had gotten engaged and he had given her the exquisite ring on her finger plus a magical first date she’d never forget. What else could there be? But as he reminded her earlier that what she brought t the table was always enough, so she wasn’t about to compete.

As they locked up the shuttle and left the bay, she gazed deeply at Dag, picnic basket in hand. “Ever since the brig, I’ve felt this need to do this one sort of dance that I haven’t really been able to do. I mean, I might dance that way in my quarters, and Alex was teaching my swing dancing of course, but I’ve never danced for someone, Dag. And maybe that’s my gift to you in return. For you to see me that way, in a way that others don’t usually get to.”

Daggum looked down and said “Faye… love of my life… my bride-to-be… my friend… you can dance for me in whatever way you want to whenever you want to. All I ask is that you keep your clothes on in public. Well… at least some of them.” and he he grinned and winked at her.

She laughed loudly. “Don’t worry, my social quirks mean I’m unlikely to be an exhibitionist ever, but in private? Well, there are always new frontiers to explore,” Faye said with a wicked gleam.

Dropping off the basket, they wandered back through the promenade, the atmosphere having changed dramatically now that it was evening on the station. There was a charged excitement at this hour and Faye normally would have veered towards quieter places. But on this the last chapter of their last night together before he left, Faye was pulled towards the nightclub, a thrum from the bass beat echoing into the corridors nearby. A anticipatory grin slipped onto her face and she squeezed Daggum’s hand. “Time to introduce you to another Faye no one around these parts has ever seen,” she said, all but giddy.

In the dim light of the club, mood lighting cut paths to the dance floor, the bar, and many booths and tables scattered around the edges. Some sort of dance music was going and even now as the sound of all the people made it hard to hear anything that wasn’t close to your own ear, she was unusually comforted. Normally in crowds Faye faded to the edges, her anxiety spiking in large crowds. But here, everyone was a stranger and you could simply disappear into the throng and become someone else. That was the magic she had discovered one time in her freighter days.

Each step in her body found the beat and began to sway with each footfall, the lights occasionally catching the sequins and beads of her black sheer tunic. Turning and walking backwards, Faye grabbed his hands and pulled him with her, a grin plastered to her face, her lips mouthing I love you as she found the groove of the music and began to surrender to it. Her mother sang and played instruments. Her maternal grandmother had apparently been a skilled painter. But for Faye, art had found a way through her in her garden design and her way of physically connecting with music. She didn’t have words for the way she could sometimes lose herself entirely as she danced, and thus became somehow connected to everything. And later, her scientist brain could more aptly appreciate the beauty of the universe she existed in. Here she was more whole than perhaps anywhere else, and not for the first time did she wonder why it took her so long to find her way back to a dance floor. Maybe it had been Alex’s lessons that prompted her to re-explore this part of herself, or maybe it was everything else she’d been through that made her seek ways to express herself when words utterly failed her. Either way, this was a taste of freedom.

Daggum watched his fiancé’s shift with a smile, but inside there was worry. Was this part of a manic episode? Was she really ok? He knew before he professed his feelings to her that Faye had problems… she had always been open with him about that. And the problems worried him… but they never scared him. Faye had issues, yes… but without them Faye wouldn’t be Faye.

And that is when he saw her surrender to the music. There, at that moment, Daggum watched her truly come to life. Her body moving with a grace and a synchronicity to the music no one in the crowd matched. Faye flowed with the rhythm and the music, becoming one with it… a physical manifestation of the music around them…

Daggum smiled. She had never more beautiful to him than that moment… and if it were possible to fall in love with the same person again? Without falling out of love first? Then that is what happened to him. He moved to her and lifted her up, kissing her with a love and desire he didn’t even know he had in him; and then he set her down and smiled.
