“Me personally? Or me as the Commander of this ship?” Cochrane asked and smiled slightly. “As the Captain, I want to be kept current on the crew’s morale and mental health on a regular basis… probably more regularly than most. My opinion is that we are very far from home, and that isolation is exponentially higher than normal ship duty. So I want to know weekly how the crew is. I also want to know if anyone is having issues that can or may affect their work or their duties. I don’t want that filtered through the Department Head, I want to hear it directly from you along with your counseling plan and overall assessment. I also want you to know that I will not keep anyone here who is having issues that are better dealt with closer to Federation space. No assignment is worth permanent mental trauma. As for me personally?” and he paused for a long moment and then took a deep breath.

“Well, you should probably know that your predecessor and I were… close. Romantically involved. That did not work out well. Her departure was… abrupt, to say the least. But it was necessary for her. Since then, I will admit to some feelings that are complicated by my personal history, probably. So personally I would like the opportunity to discuss that with you outside of the regular Command Psychological Assessment.”

Sair nodded slowly. “Absolutely. I want to say I’m at your disposal, but one counsellor for this large of a ship and I can realistically say that if you give me some notice, I will always make time for you, Captain.” She was quiet for a moment before she continued. “I know personally what it’s like to have… connection with someone you work with. It has its share of complications and when it ends, no matter how good or bad that ending, there’s a grieving period. We’ll talk more about this later, but for now, just remember that even you, the captain of the magnificent starship, are allowed to have your bad days too,” she said gently. “As far as the crew goes, I’m glad we’re on the same wavelength, because I will need to bounce my observations off of someone regularly, because this is all new to me and I want to make sure I’m interpreting them correctly.”

“One thing I am very well aware of is my own ability to have a bad day, Counselor.” and Cochrane laughed. “And you are free to come to me with anything regarding the crew. I know the majority of them at least in passing, so I am willing to help and let you know if anything is awry. So… now that we have the introductions and formalities over with, would you like to have dinner with myself and the XO this evening? Perhaps a few of the Department Heads? Might help to get to know them outside of the regular assessments and such.”

A wide smile etched itself into her features, light shining from her warm brown eyes. “I’d love that! It will be nice to get to know everyone outside of office hours. I’m not exactly booked up today, so just say when and where and I’ll be there.”

“Officer’s Mess. 1900 hours. Casual dress. Oh, and you’ll meet Chef Harv. The last Counselor never spoke to him… I’d like you to see to it that trend doesn’t continue. He is… unique. And comes with some baggage attached that will be up to him to share. But I think its time he begins the process of dealing with his past. Just to drop another thing onto your plate. 9h, and you will absolutely have to chase him down.”

Songz smiled knowingly. “Captain, I was an emergency room physician for many years. If there’s anything I know it’s how to treat difficult patients. It’s different now, but not really. Not how it counts,” she said with a grin.

Cochrane looked at her flatly, but there was a hint of a mischievous twinkle in his eyes. “Well… if you say so…” he said in an amused and knowing fashion.

“Oh, and I’m sure the information would have been in my files, but I have a young son- he’s two. He will be joining me here on the ship, but I wanted to get settled so that I could make his transition as smooth as possible. My parents will bring him over once I have everything ready. I just wanted you to have a heads up in case there were any formalities I’d have to take care of that someone forgot to tell me about.” Despite her apprehension about bring Koro out into space, she was so excited for him to see the amazing things he’d get to see for the first time. It was a shame it wasn’t her who showed him space for the first time, but her parents had never been either so she thought it special the three of them would share that memory.

Cochrane smiled “Children are welcome. Just make sure he goes through the standard check ins with Medical and the teaching staff. And he will, of course, have to be shown around the ship by me. That way when he pushes buttons, I get blamed.” and he smiled wider and chuckled. “Now then… what do you need from me to help you get settled? Tour? Are your quarters adequate for you and your son? Anything at all, nows the time to ask.”

Cochrane, CO

Sair truly considered his words and shook her head. “Quarters are great and I’ll get to unpacking a bit soon, but to be honest I think as nice as a tour might be I’m just going to go get myself lost. Way more fun,” she said with a grin. And indeed, she had had such a lovely chat on her way up here that she figured if she really did get that turned around that she needed help finding her way, someone would be around. Or the computer. But she preferred people as a first go-to.

Rising to he feet, Songz gave a bow of her head. “Thank you, Captain. I’m looking forward to working with you, and to dinner tonight.”

Cochrane stood and extended his hand. “Welcome to the Manhattan, Counselor. We are glad to have you with us. And I look forward to meeting your son.”

Cochrane, CO

Sair shook his hand without missing a beat and smiled. “Thank you, Captain. I’m looking forward to this very much.”

With another bow of her head, Songz left his ready room, musing to herself that as much as this would be another big change, it was slightly familiar territory and so it would probably make for an easier transition. Se hoped.
