“Good, ” she said with a smile. “Now, I’ve been doing my best to do my reading so I have a grasp of where everything is at, but why don’t you sum up where the Manhattan is right now and how you as her commanding officer fit into all of that?”

Cochrane smiled and said “The ship is currently operating at peak efficiency and is doing really incredible work within out stated mission of exploration and discovery. We have made contact with known species, as well as a successful… if somewhat startling… first contact mission with the Graviens. The crew is in good spirits after a two week leave, and we are heading towards a system that has intrigued Federation scientists since the Voyager logs were made available. I, as the Captain, have the job to ensure that everyone has the tools they need to be successful at their jobs, ensure everyone is doing what needs to be done, health and safety is paramount in all departments, and keeping the ship on task and safe. The Manhattan is our home… and I keep our home in order.” He finished the statement with a grin. He was proud of the crew and the ship… and it showed.

Beaming at him, Sair nodded. “Sounds busy, as I know most Starfleet captains are. Tell me how your work-life balance is.” More than anything, beyond being a sounding board, she wanted to also be a reminder that life still had to happen and it could pass you by when you weren’t looking.

Alex sighed and smiled a rueful smile. “It was good. But then… well… your predecessor left and that hurt. So I have thrown myself into my work, as one does. But I have given myself a standard moth to feel sorry for myself- in private only, of course- and I have a dear friend who is helping me take advantage of my limited downtime. Oh, and if you haven’t met Lieutenant Commander Calloway already, I strongly suggest you make her acquaintance. She is a very large part of this ship, both in duty and in personality. And she will be leaving us in the next few months.” and he smiled and shook his head again while looking at Sair. “Annnd I will probably throw myself into my work again then. Well, except for the garden. She’ll shoot me… again… if I let that go unattended.” and he chuckled.

Sair frowned ever so slightly but decided that last comment probably didn’t need clarification. “Ahh, yes, Calloway. The name is familiar and I do believe she’s high on my list of people to see this week.”

“Besides… garden? How else to you let off pressure? Hobbies, exercise? What works for you?” Sair asked.

Alex smiled and said “Gardening, and I play music. Stringed instruments mostly. Cello, bass, guitar, violin… a few others. I find music to be quite… cathartic. If I wasn’t in Star Fleet, I would probably have pursued a career in music.”

At that Sair seemed, if possible, to brighten more. Her pale brown eyes lit up and and she couldn’t hep but clap her hands together. “Oh! How wonderful to know there are other musicians here! I play a stringed instrument from Kobliad called a prizar. We’ll have to compare them sometime!” she said, overcome with giddiness. “Oh, and maybe we can find others too? I donn’t know how that works around here , but-” her enthusiasm had gotten away from her again and once again was misplaced. Sair clasped her hands together. “And this isn’t the time for this, but maybe later we can talk more. Tell me more about your music though. How often do you play?”

~Sair Songz, CNS

Cochrane chuckled and said “We have a few musicians on the ship. I even managed to get our CSO playing, and she is doing quite well. As for me, I play every day. Usually in my quarters, but I have a particular holodeck program I use to play in as well. That I do as time permits, usually once every few weeks or so. I tend to the Terran Classical music, but I know some of the Klingon pieces and am quite comfortable with them; and they transfer to the cello quite well. I don’t believe I have heard any Kobliad music, though. I do hope we can play some time.”

Cochrane, CO

“I look forward to the opportunity,” Sair said. “Has the music been helping with recent events?” she asked. She was, of course, piecing together the things he had said and as they went along she was sure she’d have a more complete picture of where he was at.
